Celebrity Interview: Bob Champion MBE

Bob is an English former jump jockey who won the 1981 Grand National on Aldaniti. His triumph was made into a film called Champions, with John Hurt portraying him. The film is based on Bob’s book Champions Story, which he wrote with close friend, racing journalist and broadcaster Jonathan Powell. In 2002 he was chosen as one of the 100 Greatest Sporting Moments by Channel 4 viewers.

After battling cancer himself he founded The Bob Champion Cancer Trust in 1983.

Where’s the most memorable place you’ve ever enjoyed a Glass of Bubbly?
Newbury racecourse – after I had won on a horse called Right Lad in a Novice Chase trained by Ms Sinclair – I had a right touch and with the winnings put down the deposit for my first house. Cheers!

Which is your favourite Champagne or sparkling wine?
Veuve Clicquot.
