Sparkling Wine and doughnuts

Would you like a doughnut? If your answer is “yes”, then keep on reading, we’ll be pairing a doughnut and Sparkling Wine together to see how they react, will it be beautiful or will it clash, let’s find out!

When it comes to the person who is the biggest fan of the doughnut, I think it’s safe to say it’s a family man, who sleeps on his job, and enjoys drinking beer with his friends at Moe’s, yes, it’s Homer Simpson, I can’t think of another person who even comes close to the love Homer has for doughnuts.

We all love a sugary treat every now and again and with these sugary treats, you might be interested to know that you could pair a bottle of Sparkling Wine with it.

Sparkling Wines have different sugar levels, depending on how much sugar is in each bottle will determine how sweet a Sparkling Wine will taste.

  • Brut Natural or Brut Zero has less than 3 grams of sugar per litre or no sugar at all.
  • Extra Brut has less than 6 grams of sugar per litre, so is sweeter.
  • Brut has less than 12 grams of sugar per litre so is sweeter still.
  • Extra Dry has up to 17 grams of sugar.
  • Dry has up to 32 grams of sugar.
  • Demi-Sec has up to 50 grams of sugar.
  • Doux has more than 50 grams.

Sugar Levels in Champagne

Although it sounds like the opposite, Extra Dry and Dry are two of the most common sweetness levels you’ll see on a bottle of Sparkling Wine, so if you see dry on a Champagne or Sparkling Wine label, you’ll know it’s on the sweeter level.

These sugary treats can be found at any of your local supermarkets, soft sponge layered with sugar or sweet icing and sprinkles.

The Sugar Doughnuts

Pairing Notes – “The Sparkling Wine adds a layer of ripe fruits, at the same time toning down the sugar sweetness, replacing it with what seems like a more natural one.”

The Sprinkled Doughnut

Pairing Notes – “The icing sugar is momentarily replaced with glistening ripe green fruits, then a comparison ship is born, delivering both flavours from the doughnut and wine together.”
