13 Frightful Nights – Night 5 – Outlast

Outlast

A first-person survival horror game, Outlast was developed and published by Red Barrels, it took its time releasing among the gaming community, releasing on the 4th of September, 2013 for the PC, the 4th of February, 2014 for PS4 and the 19th of June, 2014 for Xbox One, it would also release on the Nintendo Switch in February 2014 as the Outlast: Bundle of Terror, including the original game and DLC.

The story of Outlast focuses on Miles Upshur, a freelance American investigative journalist, who decides to investigate Mount Massive Asylum, a remote psychiatric hospital.

Miles Upshur: [Written note] Dying keeps moving lower on the list of the worst things that could happen to me here.

It’s Pre-sequel DLC, Outlast: Whistleblower takes you back before the events of Outlast, focusing on Waylon Park, the man who tipped off Miles Upshur to the psychiatric hospital.

The game was positively received by critics and players, with people loving the gameplay, on-edge atmosphere and horror moments, what helped with the huge success of the game was the wave of famous YouTubers like PewDiePie, Jacksepticeye and Markiplier getting their hands on the game and recording themselves getting terrified while playing the game. Outlast sold around 4 million copies by the end of 2016, as of May 2018, the whole series has sold 15 million copies, and according to Philippe Morin, the founder of Red Barrel in a recent documentary stated that a little over 20 million units had been downloaded across all platforms.

Fans waited with anticipation for the sequel, Outlast 2 to be released, which it did on the 25th of April 2017 on all systems, it was mostly positively reviewed by critics, but some had mixed feelings, fans found it to be an ample second game, taking the setting from the confined rooms of an Asylum to the open mountain wilderness.

Val: “God doesn’t love you. Not like I do.”

As of May 2018, the series had sold 15 million copies. But the story didn’t end with Outlast 2, Red Barrel put together another game for the series, The Outlast Trials, which is a multiplayer-focused game, taking the core principles from the original games and giving the chance to survive with friends.

The Rum – Twisted Roots Distillery

If you go venturing into the backwoods of East Yorkshire, hidden away, you could stumble across a rare insight into the world of Moonshine and Rum. Rum Runner – Twisted Roots Distillery is producing quality English Rum and some famous Moonshine.

Handbuilt, by hammer and by fire, their copper pot still is their crowning glory, standing at 10ft tall, with the capacity to contain one thousand liters of Rum, it waits to be discovered by you, high and mighty, producing for us Brits, a taste of Rum.

We’re exploring their Honey Rum, beautifully smooth and sweet and packed full of local Honey, they used their premium 1 year cask aged Golden Rum and let their head mixologist create a wonderful blend with some rare Yorkshire Bell Heather Honey.

The Hives spend the winter less than a mile away from their distillery. When the weather warms the bees are then moved to their summer location, the North Yorkshire Moors, where they then collect the sweet tasty nectar that makes their honey.

Honey Rum Tasting Notes – “Incredibly smooth and silky, a delicious warmth from the rum surrounded by rich honey characters.”

Flavours – “A rich display, a world of sweetness from the honey rum and the dryness from the sparkling wine join together to craft a very explorative flavour, a deep dark running honey slides down the palate, with mysterious oak and woody spices, the bronze dust from the rim of the glass adds a pleasing sweetness to the experiences, the sparkling wine unites it all together with dry crisp green fruits. The rum isn’t overly sweet with the addition of the lower-sugar Sparkling Wine, creating a great balance of dryness and sweetness.”
