Happy Champagne Day!

Today, 23rd October 2015, is global Champagne Day and we hope you’re all celebrating with a few glasses of Champagne in hand!

Champagne dates back to as early as the 5th century when the Romans first planted vineyards in the Champagne region of France. Thanks to generations of winemakers and great figures throughout history, such as Dom Pérignon, who saw the potential of bubbles in wine, Champagne is the wonderful drink we know today.

Champagne is now the most famous wine – and arguably most famous drink – worldwide. It’s synonymous with many great things in life; celebration, success, happiness, luxury, friends and romance.

To celebrate, we’ve put together some of our favourite facts and quotes about this legendary bubbly…

Quotes:

“My only regret in life is that I didn’t drink enough Champagne” John Maynard Keynes

“In a perfect world, everyone would have a glass of Champagne every evening.” – Willie Glucksternlily-bollinger-small

“Pleasure without Champagne is purely artificial.” – Oscar Wilde

“I only drink Champagne on two occasions, when I am in love and when I am not” – Coco Chanel

“Champagne! In victory one deserves it, in defeat one needs it.” – Napoleon Bonaparte

Did you know…?

  • There are approximately 49 million bubbles in a standard sized bottle of Champagne.
  • For every carbon dioxide molecule that turns into a bubble in a glass of Champagne, 4 others escape into the air.
  • Champagne has three times the gas content of beer! It emits 30 bubbles per second!
  • If you open a bottle of Champagne & there’s a loud pop then you’ve actually lost bubbles.
  • Large bubbles are considered extremely unsightly and are not the mark of good quality Champagne. The tinier the bubble the better.
