Interview With The Head of Wines at Bob Bob Ricard Giacomo Recchia

The World of Wine is beautifully showcased every day by passionate people, who help the consumer discover their next favourite bottle, understand the different regions and pair a delicious meal with the right Glass of Bubbly.

In this feature, I speak with a man from England, who has helped many people to discover the vast world of Wines and Sparkling Wines, his name is Giacomo Recchia, let’s find out about his life as the Head of Wines at Bob Bob Ricard.

Tell Us A Bit About Yourself And How You Became Involved In The Wine Industry

“I am the Head of Wines at Bob Bob Ricard restaurants, originally from Apulia. I initially moved to Perugia to pursue studies in Hospitality Management and later spent nine months in Barcelona for a postgraduate training program. After three years spent working for Mercure Hotel in Spain, I relocated to London in 2018.

I am a Master Court-certified Sommelier and a WSET Diploma student. My passion for wines originated within my family. Since adolescence, I have been actively involved in my father’s restaurant, where I observed the world of wines and Champagnes with curiosity, sometimes sneaking a little taste.

A crucial moment that significantly deepened my connection to the wine industry and influenced my sommelier career occurred when I chose to work for an organic wine grower in the South of France, Languedoc Roussillon. Witnessing the dedication and hard work of the winegrowers, as well as the passion they infused into their craft, solidified my decision to pursue a career in the world of wine.”

For Anyone Visiting Bob Bob Ricard To Enjoy A Glass Of Bubbly, Can You Tell Us A Bit About What Customers Can Expect To Discover On Your Own Wine List?

“Bob Bob Ricard is globally renowned for its iconic “Press for Champagne” button—a must-try experience.

Our wine list boasts an extensive selection of Champagnes, all reasonably priced. At Bob Bob Ricard, we cap the margins instead of applying a fixed percentage to the wine cost price. This approach ensures that indulging in premium Champagnes like Dom Pérignon 2013, Bollinger Grande Annee 2014, or Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 2012 won’t break the bank!”

How Do You See The Future Of English Sparkling Wine?

“In my perspective, the English sparkling wine industry has not only secured a significant portion of the British market but is poised for substantial growth in the years to come. The increasing prevalence of producers building up reserves of base wines has been instrumental in enhancing the overall quality. This practice allows for skillful blending, resulting in wines with greater consistency, heightened complexity, and a reduction in vintage variation.

The transformation is palpable across diverse dining establishments, ranging from casual pubs to upscale fine dining and Michelin-starred restaurants. Notably, English sparkling wines are increasingly gracing the wine lists of these venues, signifying a shift in consumer preferences and a growing recognition of the quality produced by the industry. What’s equally encouraging is the trend of these wines being offered by the glass, making them more accessible and inviting enthusiasts to explore the diverse world of English sparkling wines.”

If You Had To Choose One Glass Of Bubbly To Take With You To A Deserted Island, What Would It Be?

“Being Italian, I’ve grown up surrounded by the charm of Italian sparkling wines, with Franciacorta Barone Pizzini holding a special place among my favourites. However, when it comes to choosing a bottle to accompany me, there’s no hesitation—I’d readily opt for a bottle of Gosset Champagne.

My fortune peaked last June when I had the opportunity to explore the depths of Gosset’s cellars and indulge in a tasting guided by Odilon De Varine, the Chef de Cave. The highlight of the experience was savouring the exquisite Celebris Rosé 1998 and Gosset Vintage 1985—a moment that still lingers in my dreams!”

Thank you, Giacomo, for sharing your words, knowledge and experiences with us and we at Glass of Bubbly wish you the very best for the future!
