Ratafia de Champagne Awarded Appellation Status

Ratafia is a fortified wine made in the Champagne region, made from the same grapes as those in Champagne: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

For the first time, Ratafia de Champagne has received an official protected status (PGI, Protected Geographical Indication ). There are currently around 120 producers and sales of Ratafia are expected to increase.

While juice from grapes first or second press go to Champagne, ‘left over’ juice from the third or fourth press tends to be used to make Ratafia. It has a very distinct taste that reflects the terroir of the region. The dark golden colour comes from the two years it spends aging in oak barrels.
