Who does not enjoy a drop of fizz, the sparkling stuff, popping the Champagne open and pouring the bubbly? Just the thought of someone handing you a glass will bring a smile to your face.
The UK itself loves Champagne and sparkling wines with 1.25 billion glasses of the stuff being consumed annually so recent surveys showed!

Now, we are for sure all familiar with a few names out there from Champagne to Prosecco and makers such as Moet & Chandon and Veuve Clicquot, but do we really know which is the ultimate glass of bubbly to enjoy?

Just recently 36 of the world’s top Champagne and sparkling wine judges were invited to Westminster, London to taste through 100’s of award entries to get down to just one stand out sample. A broad selection of judges from chefs to Champagne ambassadors, wine writers to Master of Wines spent a couple of days tasting, reviewing, scoring, discussing and agreeing eventually on what they considered to be The World’s Finest Glass of Bubbly.

A professional wine judge will usually score a wine on the look, aroma and taste by scoring out of 100 points to decide on a gold, silver, bronze or highly commended badge. The awards this time though, introduced by the award’s founders Glass of Bubbly, also required judges to rate wines per descriptive category such as Fruity & Floral and Summer Days so that consumers will better understand why a wine deserves its status. And yes, professional wine judges do taste and then spit, which will horrify many people who do not like to waste their wines, but remember judges will taste through many wines each day so a blotto judge is not as good as a sober one!

The awards evening were held at the Marriott County Hall in Westminster on November 23rd with over 130 invited guests to hear the eagerly awaited announcements of this year’s winners and to declare which bubbly had the title of the world’s finest. 250 bottles of Champagne and sparkling wine were on show and open to be tasted during the evening from countries to include England, Germany, Turkey, New Zealand, Argentina, Slovenia and many more fizz producing locations globally.

The World’s Finest Glass of Bubbly was announced and the prestigious title went to Champagne Deutz and their Blanc de Blancs 2010 vintage who also scooped up two further trophies during the evening. The wine can be purchased online with Gonzalez Byass here.

All guests were poured a glass of the Champagne Deutz thus becoming the first people to toast and taste The World’s Finest Glass of Bubbly for 2017 – Champagne Deutz received a standing ovation as they walked to the stage to claim their trophy.

The search now begins to discover the winner for 2018… Glass of Bubbly is calling out to you: Do you fancy being one of the judges for 2018? We are searching for Champagne and sparkling wine loving consumers who would like to spend a few days of tasting and scoring in London in September 2018 (Please contact eve@glassofbubbly.com to find out more).
