Step by Step Guide to Serving a Glass of Bubbly
21st February 2017
You want to make sure you and your guests get the most out of that nice bubbly you bought, so here’s how to serve like a pro.
Step 1 – Make sure the bottle has been sufficiently chilled – approximately 2 hours in the fridge or 20 minutes in an ice bucket.
Step 2 – Opening the bottle. Once the foil and wire cap has been removed, place the palm of your hand over the cork. Hold the bottle at a 45 degree angle and gently twist the bottom of the bottle. You should hear a gentle hiss as it opens. Be careful to avoid pointing it at anyone, just in case!
Step 3 – Ready to serve! Make sure the bottle is dry, so wipe it down with a towel if needed. If you’re confident enough, hold the bottle by placing your thumb in the indentation under the bottle (know as the punt) and rest your fingers under the weight of the bottle.
Step 4 – Although traditionally the glass is left flat on the surface, tilting it can help retain more bubbles. If you or something else can hold the glass at a 45 degree while the wine is being poured.
Step 5 – Pour the bubbly slowly down the side of the glass. Pause to avoid it foaming up, then top up the rest.
Step 6 – Enjoy! Now, the next step is learning how to sabre the bottle…
