Let’s Find Out A Little Bit More About Some Italian Royalty
Italy had the Royal Monarchy from the 17th of March, 1861, first ruled by Victor Emmanuel II, he was King of Sardinia from 1849 until 17 March 1861, he then assumed the title of King of Italy and made history becoming the first King of a united Italy since the 6th century, he held that position until he died on the 9th of January 1878.
He was followed by his son, Umberto I, who took over on the same day, he reigned until he was assassinated on the 29th of July 1900, during his time in power he saw Italy’s expansion into the Horn of Africa, gaining Eritrea and Somalia and also saw the defeat by Abyssinia at the Battle of Adwa in 1896.
Victor Emmanuel III followed on from his father on the same day he was assassinated, he reigned as King until he abdicated on the 9th of May 1946, he ruled for almost 46 years and he stood through two world wars. Interesting to note that his reign also encompassed the birth, rise, and fall of Italian Fascism and its regime. He went into exile in the great city of Alexandria in Egypt, where he died on the 28th of December 1947, and the following year was buried in St. Catherine’s Cathedral of Alexandria, his remains were later, in 2017 returned to Italy thanks to Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi making an agreement.
Finally, the throne was handed down to Umberto II, but not for long, his reign lasted for only 34 days, from the 9th of May 1946 to the 12th of June 1964, his dad Emmanuel III abdicated believing it would bolster the monarchy after the royal family backed Benito Mussolini in World War II, unfortunately for them, it didn’t, the people voiced their opinions and punished the royal family for what they did, the referendum passed on the 2nd of June, 1946. Umberto II then lived out the rest of his life in exile in Cascais, on the Portuguese Riviera.
