What Sparkling Wine Goes With Fish Pie?
12th May 2022
The Fish Pie or Fisherman’s Pie is one of those warming English Dishes, when the Fish Pie was originally constructed, it utilised the fish scraps, ensuring they did not go to waste, they were then covered in a white sauce or cheddar cheese sauce and then oven-baked.
The Fish Pie doesn’t use any pastry, it uses mashed potato and you can add egg or herbs to the pie, but the original recipe used only the 2 ingredients.
The first recorded recipe for a Fish Pie was in John Murrell’s 1615 Cookbook ‘A New Booke of Cookerie’ it contained two recipes that utilised fish scraps, an Eel Pie and Crab Pie. The first modern-like Fish Pie recipe was in Jessup Whitehead’s 1889 Cookbook ‘The Steward’s Handbook and Guide to Party Catering’ which has a recipe to poach fish, drain it and then cover it with cream before cooking.
