The famous and delicious Black Forest Gâteau that originated in Germany, will today be paired with a well-known German Sparkling Wine.
The Black Forest Gâteau is a popular German dessert, in Germany, it is called Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte which translates to ‘Black Forest Cherry Gateau’. It is a chocolate sponge cake with a cherry filling and whipped cream on top.
Although there is a Black Forest mountain range in southwest Germany, the Gâteau supposedly gets its name from the Cherry Liquor which it is made with, the liqueur is distilled from tart cherries and is named the Schwarzwälder Kirsch(wasser)
What we can say for sure is the first time Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte was mentioned in writing was in 1934. The Gâteau was famous in Berlin, spreading out amongst the high-class Gâteau lovers of Germany, then into Swiss and Austrian cities. The Gâteau also took 13th place for the best-known German cakes in 1949.
The world’s largest Black Forest Gâteau was presented on July 16th, 2006, weighing 3,000kg and measuring nearly 860 sq ft, it took 5,600 eggs to make.
