In this feature, I speak with a man who has helped many people to discover the vast world of Wines and Sparkling Wines, his name is Ashish Jha, let’s find out a bit about his life as a Sommelier.
Tell Us About Yourself
“Humble and down to earth. I was born and raised in a small village in India in Bihar. I was raised in a farming family with a superbly cool and supportive mom Nutan Jha and dad Shrawan Jha. My father’s biggest dream was to see me pass WSET Level 3 in wines. Being a farmer’s son made me determined to work for my profession. I have completed my Batchelor’s degree in Hotel Management from the Nshm Knowledge campus in West Bangal. After doing my training from Hyatt, I worked in India’s strongest Hotel Brand Taj Hotel for a couple of years then moved to Dubai. Dubai is the place where I got the confidence after working in one of the finest Five-star hotels of Dubai Ja the resort under great leaders.”
During Your Time As A Sommelier, What’s The Most Surprising Thing You’ve Learnt?
“I always wanted to be on top of my work. I personally believe you can be at the top of the hierarchy after spending decades in the Hotel industry but to put the Sommelier before your name you have to work extremely hard. It’s a pride in itself to be called a Sommelier. There is no other reason.”
What Inspired You To Become a Sommelier?
“It’s everyday learning. I have learned more from the guests rather than books themselves. The guests from different regions share the knowledge which is not in the books.”
What Advice Would You Give An Inspiring Sommelier?
“STUDY, STUDY, STUDY. It’s an everyday process. You have to give your everything to become a sommelier. Apart from the knowledge you need to have great leadership skills. Once you become a sommelier the expectations of the coworkers will be high for you. You have to be open minded and always ready to share your knowledge.”
If You Sat Down For A Quiet Dinner, What Dish And Sparkling Wine Would You Choose To Enjoy Together?
“I am old school. I would go for a glass of Sterling di Notte 2011 Prosecco.”
Thank you, Ashish, for sharing your words, knowledge and experiences with us and we at Glass of Bubbly wish you the very best for the future!
