13 Frightful Nights – Night 6 – The Woman In Black

The Woman In Black

Releasing one year after the final Harry Potter movie, Daniel Radcliffe played the leading role, Aruther Kipps in The Woman In Black, this was the first movie we got to see him in since he vanquished He Who Must Not Be Named (Lord Voldemort) although the final Harry Potter films took on a dark tone towards the end, it was a rather clever move, after cementing his name forever in the movie history books as Harry Potter, Daniel would need to redefine himself as an actor capable of been perceived in other parts, and why not just straight into Horror.

The Woman In Black premiered at the Royal Festival Hall in London before being theatrically released on the 3rd of February 2012 in North America and on the 10th in the UK.

Mr. Daily: If we open the door to superstition, where does that lead?

It is not the first movie to be released, Daniel Radcliffe’s version of The Woman In Black is a remake of the original 1989 film, which was adapted from Susan Hill’s 1983 novel, The Woman In Black.

The 2012 film was directed by James Watkins from a screenplay by Jane Goldman, it had a budget of £32 million and grossed $130 million worldwide, it was rather well received by critics and fans.

Movie Fact: The film had plans to be filmed in 3D, but ultimately those plans never came to fruition

  • The Woman In Black – 1989
  • The Woman In Black – 2012
  • The Woman in Black: Angel of Death – 2015

As with most successful films, a sequel springs to the minds of those who produced it, and so, The Woman in Black: Angel of Death was created, releasing on 2nd of January 2015, without Daniel Radcliffe, and some other prominent characters, this time it had a budget of $15 million and still made a profit of $48.9 million, it wasn’t as much of a success and didn’t review as highly.

Mr. Daily: I believe even the most rational mind can play tricks in the dark.

The Sparkling Wine – Vina Stoka

Stoka has been around since 1839, but they first started marketing the Stoka brand in 1989, the same year they started bottling their wine. They own 30 hectares of land, with 7 hectares being used as vineyards, across those 7 hectares are 30,000 vines, all growing grapes.

They are located on the southwest Slovenian border, in the area of Krast, situated 200-300 meters above sea level.

The Gin – Becketts

Becketts Gin uses our very own country-grown English juniper berries. The juniper berry has been in decline in England over the recent decades, with many populations on the brink of local extinction due to poor seed quality, disease and other factors.

In England, the Juniper Berry generally exists on the chalk downs of Southern England. To help save juniper from local extinction in England they are undertaking a long-term conservation project in conjunction with the National Trust and Natural England which will create a new juniper population on Juniper Top in Surrey.

I reached out to Neil from Kingston Distillers to find out how the project was going.

“The conservation project had a mixed start but has really begun to make a lot of progress over the last few years. From every annual harvest of juniper berries from Box Hill since 2014, we pass a proportion to a nursery to go through the very tortuous process of extracting the seeds, stratifying them and then planting them in seed pots for germination.

For the first few years, the nursery we used had limited success and the saplings all subsequently died. We moved to another nursery for the 2018 crop onwards. They didn’t produce any viable saplings from the first year’s crop but subsequent years have been fantastic. – Neil from Kingston Distillers
