In this feature, I speak with a man from, Croatia, who has helped many people to discover the vast world of Wines and Sparkling Wines, his name is Mirko Prijic, let’s find out about his life as a Sommelier.
Tell Us About Yourself
“I’m Mirko Prijic, with 20 years of experience in hospitality. I graduated from the prestigious Wine Academy in Bordeaux, CAFA Wine Academy, where I successfully completed the 5th level, I’m also a wine consultant for wineries. Additionally, I impart my expertise to young minds in a hospitality school. I hold the esteemed position of Head Sommelier at both the renowned Black Pig restaurant and Terra Negra Country Club.”
Do You Remember Your First Experience With Sparkling Wine? When It Was And What Kind Of Wine It Was?
“I can’t actually remember when my first experience with sparkling wine was, it was a long time ago but I remember it was a Moët & Chandon and it was something amazing for me. The bubbles, the texture, everything was amazing, totally different than I’ve tried before.”
What Inspired You To Become a Sommelier?
“The old sommelier’s graceful wine service, insightful discussions, and profound knowledge deeply inspired me to pursue a career as a sommelier. Witnessing his passion for wines was truly amazing. Learning from someone with extensive knowledge can indeed be a kickstart into the world of wine.”
During Your Time As A Sommelier, What’s The Most Surprising & Interesting Thing You’ve Learnt?
“Discovering the vast diversity of wines and the depth of knowledge you can acquire about them has been truly surprising for me.”
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Sommeliers?
“To become a successful sommelier, focus on developing a deep knowledge of wines, regions, and varietals. Practice tasting and refining your palate regularly. Build a strong network within the industry and seek mentorship opportunities. Stay updated on industry trends and continuously expand your wine repertoire. Effective communication skills are crucial; learn to articulate tasting notes and recommendations with confidence. Lastly, cultivate a genuine passion for wine, as enthusiasm is infectious and enhances the overall dining experience for patrons.”
Where’s The Most Memorable Place You’ve Enjoyed A Glass of Bubbly?
“The most memorable glass of bubbly I enjoyed was in Bordeaux, specifically in the Cite du Vin. It was a Charles Heidsieck Champagne that made the experience truly unforgettable.”
