The Success of Prosecco, the Most Consumed Sparkling Wine in the World
1st November 2024
Prosecco holds a major place in the bubbles market, dominating Champagne with 880 million bottles of Prosecco sold worldwide in 2023, compared to 325 million bottles for its direct competitor.
JAYA Prosecco, whose production is based near Venice in the north-east of Italy, has become in a few years one of the essential Prosecco in Switzerland with more than 50,000 bottles sold in French-speaking Switzerland alone. The company is owned by Tancredi Pascale, an Italian-Swiss entrepreneur based in Pully, Switzerland, whose mission is to restore Prosecco to its former glory without compromising on quality.
Did you know that Switzerland is the second largest consumer of Prosecco in the world per capita? As the holiday season approaches, why not treat yourself to some Prosecco bubbles and JAYA gift boxes to slip under the tree?
Prosecco: figures to make your head spin
In 2023 , 616 million bottles were produced in the Prosecco DOC appellation, compared to 102 million for the Prosecco Superiore Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG appellation, for a total, for all appellations, of 880 million bottles of Prosecco .
Compared to 2022 , the production of Prosecco DOC amounted to 634 million bottles, against 103 million for Prosecco DOCG Conegliano Valdobbiadene, for a total, for all appellations, of 737 million bottles of Prosecco.
In terms of exports, the United States is the leading importer with 27.5% of imports of the total number of bottles produced. Then come Germany and the United Kingdom with 12.3% and 12.4%. As for Switzerland, it positions itself with 5.1% of exports.
“Prosecco owes this global success above all to the craze for cocktails of which it serves as a base, notably the Aperol-Spritz or the more recent Hugo. Protected by a Controlled Designation of Origin (DOC) and produced exclusively in the North-East of Italy, in nine provinces stretching between Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, this sparkling wine is much more complex than it seems. It is made from Glera grapes, a rustic and vigorous native grape variety, and requires very special care ”

JAYA Prosecco sales are steadily increasing
Of the 100,000 bottles of JAYA Prosecco sold per year worldwide, the brand sells more than 50,000 bottles in French-speaking Switzerland alone, according to 2023 figures.
With 2024 not yet over and the holiday season set to be intense, JAYA is aiming to sell 70,000 bottles in French-speaking Switzerland this year.
In Europe, sales peaks generally occur between May and the end of September, during the warm season, and then from November to the end of January for the end-of-year holidays. In summer, however, sales are partly dependent on the weather.
The Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene in northern Italy were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019. It is the 10th place in the world to be classified as a “cultural landscape” due to its its unique interaction between man and nature.
International expansion for JAYA
After its development in China, JAYA Prosecco has expanded to France, now being present in more than 40 points of sale across France.
” We are very proud of our development in France, the country of the luxury bubble with Champagne. The fact that this country is opening its doors to us, and not just any country, represents a strong accelerator for JAYA and an excellent way to acquire a new clientele sensitive to the quality of sparkling wines ,” rejoices Tancredi Pascale, Founder of JAYA Prosecco.
