12th January 2022
If you go searching on the likes of Google (can I buy alcohol free Champagne) then you will confidently say that you can as a total of 135 million search results are delivered and many positively stating options for non-alcoholic Champagne. So yes, alcohol free Champagne does exist right? Though if we explore the results (links) further by opening them up and taking a peek of the contents then it is a different story altogether…
There are websites that will lead with the word Champagne, but further investigation show us that it is other sparkling wines they are referring to and usually the likes of Cava, Prosecco and Spumante. Non-alcoholic sparkling wine are gaining in popularity as are low alcohol sparkling wines, not only is it an healthier option (and safer such as when combining driving) it also is a popular choice with regards to low calorie diets. Another positive point will be the price point which is usually far less than standard alcohol level options (Champagne usually 12-12.5%)
If we go by the official website of Champagne (Comité Champagne) then they clearly state all the factors required so that a sparkling wine can be classified as ‘Champagne’ and within their production section we have the following statement “The grape musts may also be chaptalized after racking (enriched with sugar) so as to obtain 11 per cent alcohol by volume by the end of fermentation.”
So officially we can not have zero alcohol Champagnes! We can though indulge in low alcohol sparkling wines with many options open to us.
