Cantina Miotto – Interview With Andrea Miotto
7th November 2024
The love of sparkling wine is infinite, a language that everyone can understand, a sparkle that can shine in anyone’s glass, it can connect people, brings them together and places a smile on faces around the world.
In this exclusive feature on Glass of Bubbly, we speak with Andrea Miotto, the skilled Winemaker at Cantina Miotto, who won the Light & Fruity Category Trophy at the Glass of Bubbly Awards 2024 for their DOCG Prosecco Extra Dry Fedéra label, so let’s discover a little about his life, his journey into the industry and one of his favoiurote bubbly memories.
It’s Great To Speak With You, Andrea, Can You Tell Us A Little About Yourself & How Your Journey Into The Wine Industry Began?
“I was born in a family of farmers, where grape growing and winemaking was very important. I grew up seeing my father managing vineyards and making lovely wines even though we were such a small company. I had a passion for winemaking and I studied at Conegliano ‘Scuola Enologica’ and then at Padua University where I got my degree in Viticulture and Winemaking. I can remember that when I was 18 my father told me: “I’ll bring the grapes home from vineyards, but from this vintage, you are going to make the wines by yourself.” It was challenging, I made mistakes, but now I’m 40 and I already have more than 20 vintages of experience and I love my job more and more every year.”
Do You Remember Your First Experience With Sparkling Wine? When It Was And What Kind Of Label It Was?
“I don’t remember it very well, to be honest. I have always seen bubbles around home. Probably my first experience was with small homemade bottle fermented wines. Maybe not very elegant and fancy, but very traditional. It reminds me of my grandparents.”
How Rewarding And Challenging Is Producing Your Own Sparkling Wines?
“Every year is different, seasons are changing, and you can never relax, but you never get bored. In the end, when a bottle has your name on the label, you can find satisfaction in tasting it and seeing customers loving your bubbles, it really gives you emotions.”
When It Comes To Pairing Your Sparkling Wine With Food, Do You Have Any Favourite Combinations That You Would Personally Recommend?
“Versatility is one of the best characteristics of a wine. Some of our Valdobbiadene Prosecco are amazing with seafood, for example, our Fedéra Brut with simple fried sardines, a classic Venetian dish. Easy but wonderful. But the most surprising is having our ProFondo, a bottle of fermented non-degorged fizzy wine with pizza. If you try that with a pizza with Prosciutto Crudo di Parma and burrata (buffalo milk) then you will regret all the times you had beer with pizza!”
If You Could Choose A Person In The World, Past Or Present, To Have A Glass of Bubbly With; Who Would It Be And Why? What Would You Drink And Why? And What Would You Discuss?
“It’s not easy, but maybe I would say Prince! I always loved his style. He was the kind of artist who maybe just looked like a good singer with bizarre dressing, but he was one of the best and most underrated guitarists in the story and his songs could be so deep and emotional. Like our wines: sometimes you think of Prosecco as a simple wine, but when you taste the real ones in Valdobbiadene you just get surprised and impressed. I think I would drink with him our Extra Brut ‘deRive’, the most elegant of our wines, and just listen to his opinion!”
Can You Share With Us Some Of The Countries And Locations Around The World That You Can Enjoy A Glass Of Miotto?
“Here in Venice, at Bistrot de Venise, or in New York, at Astor. Then in Melbourne at Grossi restaurant or maybe in Bangkok at ‘Officina del Prosciutto’. We also have many restaurants serving our wines in Prague, in Bruxelles or in Berlin!”
What Future Plans Can Enthusiasts Of Cantina Miotto Look Forward To In The Coming Years?
“What we look for is just to maintain our connection to our wonderful territory: our wines are born in the vineyards and it’s what they always have to look like. A unique territory gives unique wines.”
Can You Share With Us One Of The Most Memorable Experiences You’ve Enjoyed With A Glass of Bubbly?
“I’m a Prosecco lover, of course, but I think that when I had a bottle of Salon 2006 with my tasting mates, in 2018, I really got to understand what an amazing Glass of Bubbly is.”
Thank you Andrea Miotto, for sharing your story and experiences with us and we at Glass of Bubbly wish you the very best for the future!
