Before Champagne became a drink it was officially considered as a medicine. Some doctors still recommend it for illnesses probably much to the delight of their patients.

It was once believed to help digestion. It was also thought to be a good antiseptic. The list of this natural remedy’s cures also included easing of aches in the joints, help for women in childbirth and a treatment for some skin diseases.

Dr Henry Puget ,based in Paris, is a firm believer in Champagne as a medicine. He’s collected stories of its use from many elderly people. These old wives ‘cures’ are backed up by the chemical analysis of Champagne and their effects on the human body.

A glass of Champagne with two lumps of sugar that is simmered and drunk cold will cure a chill. If you can’t sleep a glass of Champagne is also just the trick. Two glasses will cure the blues as they regulate dopamine, the controller of well-being, in the brain.

Dr Tran Ky recommends as a general rule that about one glass of Champagne per evening is good for the health. He warns that going beyond this consumption ritual could cause problems. So be warned!

Whilst the Champagne houses are well aware of the therapeutic properties of Champagne they don’t want to push them. One study showed that the wine growers of Champagne lived longer because of consuming regularly the drink they made. Are they trying to keep the secret of longevity to themselves?
