Krug Clos du Mesnil Champagne

Krug is a stand out Champagne, admired internationally and highly respected by wine connoisseurs. Priced at well above the average for the finer tasting experiences it offers and served at some of the finest dining locations around the world.

The labels Krug offer are eagerly sought after and synonymous with a luxury lifestyle: Grande Cuvée – Krug Rosé – Krug Vintage – Clos du Mesnil – Clos d’Ambonnay – Krug Vintage Collection

Experienced Champagne drinkers see Krug as one of the finest examples and countless high scores from senior wine judges add plenty of fuel to that claim. For consumers the name ‘Champagne Krug’ is almost a household name in that whereas Moët & Chandon / Veuve Clicquot might be the names referred to when Champagne is mentioned, Krug is commonly quoted as the ‘expensive Champagne’. Just the other day a friend of mine, starting off in the world of learning more about wine, quoted Krug as “the stuff that the celebrities drink” though having never even seen a bottle in real life or noted it in any film / TV show!Christopher Walkey

Many regard the ‘clos’ labels as the jewels in the crown for Krug, each famed single vineyard plot reserved for the release of a limited production amount label. The Clos de Mesnil is one of the two you can select from and it is the bigger plot and more acclaimed:

The story with Krug and Clos du Mesnil dates back to 1971 when the family purchased the 1.87 hectare walled vineyard located in the village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger (just off from Rue Pastuer). Though this walled vineyard might have global fame, depending on the day you take a visit to the location, it can be eerily quiet with not a soul about – Having lived in France within a village community, this is quite common!

Some eight years later in to the relationship between Krug and the Clos du Mesnil they decided upon making a unique (single vineyard) cuvée, the 1979 vintage was born. The grapes from this small Chardonnay plot, producing around 12,000 bottles per harvest, has been wowing audiences globally since with several vintages which are a firm favourite in the wine investment / Champagne Collectors fraternity:

I recently attended an online talk regarding Krug Champagne and wine investments with VinoVest. I managed to ask some questions to the speakers:

Q: Can Krug confirm which of their range performs the best re investing? Is it the Collection or one of the Clos?

A: (Liz Dowty Mitchell – Senior Global Wine Trader) “It would be the vintage Krug. But the Clos du Mesnil would be 2nd.

A: (Manuel Reman – Président Champagne Krug) “I agree with Liz. On top of that, I start keeping in my cellar ancient version of Grande Cuvee Editions. I did a vertical tasting of 6 different Editions (from 2000 to 2014), breath-taking. It is more for my personal pleasure, but I guess there is something here. Our best Krug Lovers would kill for an old version of Grande Cuvée.
