Discover Champagne Mailly

7th June 2017

The domain Mailly Grand Cru is situated exclusively in the village of Mailly Champagne, in the heart of the Regional Nature Park of the Montagne de Reims.

Mailly Champagne was classified Grand Cru in 1920 and is the only Champagne House to source all of its wines from Grand Cru vineyards. Only 17 of Champagne’s 319 villages currently enjoy Grand Cru status. The fruit they produce is rare and expensive and usually reserved for the finest Champagne cuvées.

The exceptional quality of Mailly grapes comes from the area’s chalk subsoil that regulates soil temperature and humidity and hillside plantings that enjoy full exposure to the sun.

Nestled in the centre of these 70 hectares of vine-covered slopes is the winery: a glass building built above seven different levels of cellars and a kilometre-long stretch of ‘crayères’ (chalk caves).

This vaulted cellar is part of a kilometre-long network of crayères that were dug from the chalk by the estate’s founding fathers over a period of more than 30 years. Working every winter from 1929 to 1965, with only pickaxes for tools, they created the perfect environment to mature their Grand Cru Champagnes. The Champagnes are still aged here buried 19 metres underground in the cool, silent ambience of these historic chalk pits.

Champagne Mailly Grand Cru is available in more than 30 countries and you can discover the 10 Grand Cru Champagnes from the range, whilst enjoying the panoramic view.
