Does Champagne have any health benefits?
14th January 2015
Are you resisting any alcohol this month for “dry January”?
Perhaps you can cut yourself some slack, as it seems a moderate amount of Champagne might actually be good for you. Of course, too much alcohol can be harmful, so it’s important to keep it sensible!
Some of the potential benefits of a glass of bubbly:
Heart
It’s often said that a glass of red is good for the heart, but in fact, Champagne is just as good! The red grapes contain axidotidants which help lower blood pressure which can reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke.
Memory
A recent study by University of Reading in the UK suggested that drinking 1 to 3 glasses of Champagne a week could improve the memory for people over 40. It is an exciting result, showing that moderate consumption of Champagne can have a positive influence on the brain – and may even one day prevent Alzheimers!
Calories
Champagne actually contains around 80 calories, which is less than both red and white wine. The smaller ‘flute’ glasses are also smaller than most other wine glasses, so are automatic portion controllers. The perfect choice.
Age
It’s even been suggested that those who drink Champagne moderately and regularly are likely to live longer than those who do not drink at all.
Fun
And the most important benefit of all – Champagne is delicious, and makes us happy!
