Does Sparkling Wine Really Go With Cereal?
2nd August 2022
Good morning, welcome to Glass of Bubbly, may I get you a bowl of Cereal and a glass of Sparkling Wine on this fine morning?
You often don’t hear about the world of Cereal and Sparkling Wines coming together, I wonder why? Both are delicious, but not really consumed together, let’s find out why!
Why Don’t We See Sparkling Wine and Cereal Pairings?
It’s a good question, which does have a few points against it, but don’t rule it out just yet, because, despite its flaws, it still has something going for it.
First of all, Cereal is a breakfast meal, often enjoyed between the hours of 7 am to 10 am, this time of the day is not overly popular for the consumption of Sparkling Wine, unless you’re living on the ‘it’s 12 o’clock somewhere in the world’ time zone.
The second is probably the biggest, if you’re wanting to pour both Milk and Sparkling Wine into a bowl of Cereal, then you’ll get something like this.
It’s not visually appealing, it is? When milk is combined with Sparkling Wine, it changes the chemical components of the milk and forces it to curdle, which means that the milk starts to become a solid rather than its usual liquid form, it doesn’t become hard, it becomes more like a mousse rather than any milk bottle sweets.
So with the way it looks and I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want a bowl of this each morning. But If you’re someone who doesn’t mind the look, then it is still safe to eat.
If I Wanted To Have Sparkling Wine With My Cereal How Do I Do It?
There are two ways that you can enjoy some Sparkling Wine with your bowl of Cereal, the first is to make yourself a normal bowl of Cereal with milk, then pour yourself a separate ‘glass’ of Sparkling Wine to enjoy alongside, some Cereals, like one of those that I tried, worked kind of well.
The second is my favourtie, instead of pouring milk into your bowl of Cereal, skip the milk altogether and just pour in your Sparkling Wine, I think that’s the best way to enjoy Sparkling Wine with Cereal, you get to enjoy all the flavours of your Cereal in a wet condition (like you would with milk) and you get to experience the Sparkling Wine flavours (which don’t taste out of place) with an added alcohol bonus.
Cereal at the end of the day is food and we here at Glass of Bubbly know that there is a Sparkling Wine out there to enjoy alongside every and any kind of food, creating a wonderful Sparkling Wine Food Pairing, so Cereal would be no different, it’s just that mixing pure milk with Sparkling Wine isn’t necessarily recommended.
Testing The Taste of Sparkling Wine and Cereal
The Sparkling Wine which I used with these Cereal Pairing was from Slovenian Producer, Zarova with their Penina Rebula which won a Gold Medal in the Creamy Category at the Glass of Bubbly Awards 2021.
Aroma 👃 “Creamy flaky apple pie with a dollop of whipped cream on top.”
Flavour 👅 “The flavours lean more towards green apples and cooking apples with a faint sweet pastry in the distance.”
Rainbow Hoops
Bowl of Cereal with a Glass of Sparkling Wine – “Great combo, the sparkling wine tones down the milk flavour, almost removing it from the cereal, you’re left with sweet hoops with a hint of green apple zest in the background.”
Sparkling Wine in the Cereal – “The Sparkling Wine really enhances the sweet hoops, making your morning extra sweet, it also delivers a sweet/ripe green apple character that doesn’t overly stand out as out of place.”
Choco Hoops
Bowl of Cereal with a Glass of Sparkling Wine – “The chocolate almost disregards the Sparkling Wine, a very subtle hint of it remains hidden in the background, but for sure the chocolate reigns supreme.”
Sparkling Wine in the Cereal – “Slightly better at making an impression, but not by much, the chocolate continues to reign supreme, just allowing a little more of the Sparkling Wines green character to come through.”
Honey Nut Corn Flakes
Bowl of Cereal with a Glass of Sparkling Wine – “You get the lovely Crunchy honey nut flavours with a little touch of fresh green fruit.”
Sparkling Wine in the Cereal – “Wonderful, all the characters from the honey nut cereal continue to shine but with a healthy touch of alcohol and subtle notes of green fruits, you’ll be sure to enjoy a happy morning with this combination.”
