English Sparkling Wine For Valentine’s Day

We’re all falling head over heels for English Sparkling Wine at the moment, so why not pop open a bottle to celebrate on the most romantic day of the year?
This Valentine’s Day, English Fizz will be popping, flowing and dancing in our glasses, it will fill us with joy, love and excitement, it will entice, lure and seduce, so what bottle of English Sparkling Wine will you put on chill for Valentine’s Day? Bolney Wine Estate
Located just 14 miles from the south coast on the edge of the South Downs in Sussex, Bolney Wine Estate was established in 1972, it is comprised of five unique vineyard sites and their head winemaker, Sam Linter is the daughter of the founders, Janet and Rodney.
When Janet and Rodney originally founded Bolney Wine Estate they first called it Bookers Vineyard, they have just recently been bought by Henkell Freixenet.
Bolney Wine Estate also put in a lot of work to win the Glass of Bubbly’s Sustainability Trophy 2021 in partnership with Slow Food, making sure to reduce their carbon footprint, recycle when possible and give back to the planet.
Bolney Wine Estate – Bolney Bubbly Rosé – Tasting Notes
Aroma – “Red berries, strawberries, raspberries, soft and creamy with hints of a red berry cheesecake.”
Flavour – “Crisp red fruit flavours, red floral, very refreshing with a red zesty finish.”

Fox & Fox Mayfield
Jonica Fox and her husband Gerard Fox planted their first vine in 2004, it was Gerard that inspired Jonica to get into the fizz business after he tasted some English Sparkling Wine at an event in London in 2003 and by 2009 they had started producing their own Sparkling Wine. They currently own 30 acres and grow the following grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

Fox & Fox Mayfield – Meunier 2014 – Tasting Notes
Aroma – “Bruised red apples, ripe peaches, croissants, red fruits and red berries on the aroma.”
Flavour – “Rich and warming pastries, red apples, croissants, brioches and creamy notes on the palate.”

Biddenden Vineyards
Kent’s original vineyard, the Barnes family has owned and managed Biddenden Vineyards since 1969, but vines weren’t the first things planted there, there were originally over 40 acres of apple orchard, but in the late 60’s apple prices began to decline, and in 1969 they decided to turn 1/3 of their acres into vines, that’s when Biddenden Vineyards was born.
They currently have 12 different grape varieties planted over 23 acres of south-facing slopes. It’s interesting to know that their first wine was bottled in 1973, it would be amazing if you have that bottle safely stored somewhere, today they produce around 80,000 bottles per year, the vineyard is currently being run by the second & third generations of the Barnes family.
Biddenden Vineyards – Pinot Reserve 2018 – Tasting Notes
Aroma – “Zesty lemons, citrus with spring and white floral notes on the aroma, not forgetting the wonderful toasty, orange marmalade, ripe apricots and yellow plums.”
Flavour – “Citrus, lemon zest, white chalk, freshly baked pastries and recently picked flowers on the palate.”

Woodchurch Wine Estate
Woodchurch Wine Estate was Established in 2009 and is based in Kent, in the picturesque village of Woodchurch, they manage their vines by hand throughout the year to make sure they deliver the best quality English Sparkling Wines.

Aroma – “Red berries, red berry skins, strawberries, red rose petals and violets on the aroma.”
Flavour – “Drier red berries, red roses, rose petals, cranberries, raspberries, strawberries and more red things on the palate.”

Raimes English Sparkling
Raimes currently has 10 beautiful flourishing acres of vines, located in the South Downs National Park in Hampshire, Raimes is a family owned winery with Augusta and Robert being the 5th generation to farm the fields.

Aroma –“Vibrant red berries, shortbread, strawberry shortcake, cranberry and rose petals on the aroma.”
Flavour – “It has a beautiful palate of creamy strawberries and raspberries with notes of freshly baked pastries, like Summer in a glass.”

Busi Jacobsohn
Run by a husband and wife team, Susanna Busi Jacobsohn & Douglas Jacobsohn, Busi Jacobsohn is located in The Blackdown Hills along the Somerset-Devon border in south-western England.
Busi Jacobsohn – Blanc de Noirs 2018 – Tasting Notes
Aroma – “A yeasty, buttery, honey aroma with orchard fruits and yellow floral.”
Flavour – “Fizzy with a sweetness, sherbety, orchard fruits, yellow apples, white floral, hints of honey, citrus and a touch of nuttiness and biscuits on the palate.”
