When we look at the colour, it’s a lovely red velvet-like, but the colour is not what makes it unforgettable, although it helps, It’s the aroma and most certainly the flavour that grabs your attention.

Let’s Meet Our ‘Forget Me Not’ Sparkling Wine

The story of Matečko starts in the heart of the hilly region of Slovenske Gorice during the year of 1945, this is when they started their journey in the wine world, taking time to find the right grapes and blends to fuel their passion for the craft.

It wouldn’t be until 1990 onwards that they decided to expand, by adding more Sparkling Wines to their range, blending new wines for the world to taste, including one bottle containing gold flakes inside, which would definitely impress whoever is lucky enough to enjoy it with you.

They extended across 4.16 hectares of vineyards, cultivating many different types of grape varieties, including Yellow Muscat, Sauvignon, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Wleschriesling, Rhine Riesling, Traminer and Rivaner.

Like many other wineries today, they push forward in being environmentally friendly, looking after their vines and land, so that in return, they will receive quality grapes to turn into Sparkling Wine, which you will then be able to enjoy.

With this added taste of knowledge and passion under their belts, we’ll be seeing a lot more from this winery in the coming years as they continue to turn their grapes into excellent Sparkling Wines.

Reaching out to Robi Matečko, the third generation to help push the winery forward, I asked if he could share any more information about the creation of his winery and his incredible Forget Me Not Sparkling Wine.

“Our love of the vine was born a few decades ago when my grandfather first planted it. Back then this was just for fun and free time. But when my father took over we started the real business. A few years ago I also left my job and started my passion. To a wide range of wines, I added sparkling wine. First classic and then frizzante that I make also for others. If I go back to my beginnings I also invented classic sparkling wine that we named Natura. This vine is made out of our common variety Jurka which is not sprayed with fungicides. In Slovenia, I was the first one that registered this type of vine.” – Robi Matečko

We were delighted to taste their Mateckova Penina Natura, bottled in clear glass, showing you its amazing red velvet-like colour, already enticing you in to taste.

Although this bottle only received a Bronze Medal at the Glass of Bubbly Awards, it absolutely, perfectly, undoubtedly fits the Forget Me Not category and although may be hard-pressed to impress international wine judges, it would most certainly stand up high when showcased to consumers, some people won’t share the same passionate love as others, but one thing is for sure, they won’t be forgetting its flavours anytime soon.

Flavour – “The palate is almost identical to the aroma, lovely red candied fruits, rhubarb, blackberry candy, new plastic, aniseed candy and beyond.”
