Greyfriars Vineyard
4th April 2014
Greyfriars Vineyard is located in one of Surrey’s most scenic locations, on the Hog’s Back , Puttenham , just outside Guildford, Surrey. Mike and Hilary Wagstaff , who took over in late 2010, released their first vintage, a 2011 Sparkling Rosé Reserve, in September 2013 from new vines planted in 2011, with an ambition to produce over 100,000 bottles annually when the vineyard is in full operation.
Since their takeover the vineyard has seen a dramatic period of expansion with over 45,000 new vines having been planted on 30 acres of south facing chalk slopes. The three classical Champagne grape varieties , namely Chardonnay , Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, predominate as well as a few Pinot Gris.
The Wagstaffs, together with their brother in law David Line, former rock musician turned vineyard manager, have been busy developing a family business. “This was just the first of many wonderful new vintages and the start of an exciting journey for Team Greyfriars. We like to do things differently here. Watch this space for upcoming events as we will be releasing 2 new vintages later this year , hopefully to coincide with English Wine Week in late May.” says Mike Wagstaff.
In the coming months, work will start on the building of a state of the art winery, cellar and tasting room with views over the vineyards.
By 2020 the goal is to produce 100,000 bottles per year of high quality English Sparkling Wine that reflects the unique local soil conditions, climate and heritage of the Surrey North Downs.
