Grower Champagne: René Geoffroy
13th June 2016
Located in the heart of the Valée de la Marne, Champagne Geoffroy’s roots date back to the 17th century.
Their vineyard covers 14 hectares of land, extending over the slopes of Damery, Hautvillers, Fleury-la-Rivière and especially Cumières.
The vines of Cumières are classified as ‘premier cru’. Champagne Georffroy grows the 3 main Champagne grape varieties here: 24% Chardonnay, 34% Pinot Meunier and 42% Pinot Noir.
The family believes that exceptional wines depend on the soil, which they prioritise in their day to day work; they plough to aerate the soil, avoid herbicides and allow grasses to grow between the vines.
Champagnes
Geoffroy has a wonderful selection of 7 Champagnes. They produce around 9,000 cases a year so it’s one of the larger grower houses They also have a fairly strong presence in the US. Here’s a few you can find in the UK:
René Geoffroy, Expression Brut, Premier Cru
The premier cuvée of the house. 50% Pinot Meunier, 40% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay. A classic Cumières Champagne.
Geoffroy Brut Premier Cru Empreinte
The hallmark of the Pinot Noir variety from the heart of the Cumères terroir.
Geoffroy Rosé de Saignee Brut Premier Cru
One of the few houses that makes its rosé by “leeching” during maceration of Pinot Noir. After a few hours in contact with the skin of the grape, the juice gets a superb, natural colour with subtle red fruit aromas.
