“Back off, man. I’m a scientist”
Welcome to a new year of spooky Cocktails, where we choose a Halloween film and create a fitting Cocktail to enjoy alongside, I’ll give you a little history into each film and the know-how to create a delicious themed Cocktail.
Ghostbusters
The original 1984 film, entitled Ghostbusters didn’t know it yet, but it would become one of the greatest, most rewatched and loved movies of its decade and to be honest, the 80s produced a lot of competition.
The movie was released on the 7th of December that year in the UK, it was directed by Ivan Reitman, starring the unforgettable Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis and Annie Potts.
The idea for the story and the screenplay was created by Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd & Rick Moranis, but the show’s creation is largely attributed to Dan Aykroyd, a man who has always had a fascination with the spirit world.
He grew up within a family that had long believed in the supernatural, his father had published a book ‘A History of Ghosts’ his mother claimed to have seen ghosts, his grandfather experimented with contacting the dead with radios and his great grandfather was a known spiritualist.
Upon the script’s original creation, Eddie Murphy was envisioned to play the role of Winston Zeddemore, but was filming Beverly Hills Cop at the time.
“That’s a big Twinkie”
Other famous actors were also considered for different roles, for instance, the role of Dr. Peter Venkman could have seen Robin Williams, Michael Keaton, Richard Pryor, Tom Hanks, Chevy Chase or Steve Guttenberg and the role of Egon Spengler could have seen Christopher Walken, Jeff Goldblum, Christopher Lloyd or John Lithgow.
They had to pay a lot of money for the name Ghostbusters.
At the time ‘Ghostbuster’ belonged to a 1970’s children’s show called ‘The Ghost Busters’, which was owned by Universal Studios, the team considered alternative names like ‘Ghostsmashers’ Ghoststoppers’ or Ghostbreakers’ but by the end, the name Ghostbusters was sold for $500,000 and 1% of the film’s profits.
There are 4 Ghostbusters films, the original two, a poorly received remake and then more recently, a fairly decent creation.
- Ghostbusters (1984)
- Ghostbusters II (1989)
- Ghostbusters (2016)
- Ghostbusters Afterlife (2021)
Ghostbusters also made its way into the Video Game world, with one game, in particular, serving as the long awaited 3rd film to the franchise. Ghostbusters: The Video Game, released in 2009, was written by Dan Aykroyd & Harold Ramis, with an almost full original cast of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd. Harold Ramis. Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts & William Atherton voicing their respective characters.
“He slimed me”
