House of Canvino – Interview With Marc Laventure
21st November 2024
The 1st Canned Sparkling Wine to ever win a Gold Medal at the Glass of Bubbly Awards, winning the Gold Medal for their Bianco Naturally Sparkling Can in the Light & Fruity Category, we thought it essential to introduce and speak with one of the Co-Founders. So without further ado, in this exclusive feature we speak with Marc Laventure, the Co-Founder of House of Canvino, let’s find out a little about his life in the Canned wine industry.
It’s Great To Speak With You, Marc, Can You Tell Us A Little About Yourself & How Your Incredible Journey Into The Wine Industry Began?
“I’ve worked in the drinks industry for over 15 years now and started by selling brands across the on-trade predominantly, with some retail, wholesale and cash & carry customers thrown in for good measure. After leaving the security of employment in 2016 I worked as a freelance sales person for 2 years before getting the urge to do something more, something bigger. My co-founders and I spotted an opportunity for a canned Italian Sparkling wine brand in the UK, and that set us on our path to launch, which we did formally in summer 2019.”
Do You Remember Your First Experience With Sparkling Wine? When It Was And What Kind Of Label It Was?
“I can’t remember my first experience but I can tell you what it was. My grandfather was in hospitality himself owning a members club in Mayfair for over 30 years and tied with his French-Mauritian roots, he LOVED Champagne. As a result it became a family tradition that any baby born a Laventure would sample Champagne off of his little finger whilst still being in hospital (obviously I’m not condoning this but times were different then!), so that was the first taste I experienced other than milk and I’ve loved it as long as I can remember. In terms of label, my dad tells me he was a big fan of Cristal Brut, but I couldn’t be sure it was that. Probably whatever he had most of in the cellar that week!”
How Rewarding And Challenging Is Owning Your Own Canned Sparkling Wines Company?
“I would say that the rewarding elements outweigh the challenging times, but that may be because we choose to remember them more. It is a tough question to answer as we have had to navigate some of the most challenging external factors that our industry have had to face in at least my lifetime since we launched, but that being said these challenges have taught me a lot more than I would have learned otherwise. Resilience and determination have been more key than ever, and I’m also extremely proud of what we’ve been able to achieve under the circumstances.”
What Inspired You To Choose Italian Sparkling Wine For Canvino?
All 3 founders backgrounds’ are in hospitality, and so we had a clear strategy and focus on this channel to launch the brand. With this in mind, an Italian Sparkling wine similar to Prosecco was a logical choice in the product we would take to market, as Prosecco was and is in high-demand for a day/evening out. This led us to building the relationship with our winery partners the Decordi family who produce some beautiful sparkling wines including Prosecco, and our products are no different in their production method. We wanted to be able to offer a product in can that was ‘bottle-quality’ and better than anything else we could find on the market.”
Can You Share With Us Some Of The Locations That You Can Enjoy A Can Of Canvino?
“As above our core focus has been hospitality and you will find us in some fantastic locations around the UK including theatres, music venues, festivals, cricket grounds, stadiums and more. Follow us on socials @houseofcanvino to see where.”
What Future Plans Can Enthusiasts Of Canvino Look Forward To In The Coming Years?
“We’re currently working closely with the Decordi winery selecting and discussing some new wines to launch in 2025. Watch this space for more info!”
Can You Share With Us One Of The Most Memorable Experiences You’ve Enjoyed With A Glass of Bubbly?
“It’s gotta be either the toast on my wedding day, or the toast to my firstborn entering the world, as it was a whirlwind birth. My wife went into labour at 5.45am, and by 4pm we were home, daughter in arms opening a bottle of bubbly with my Dad and some family to toast her. That was a very special memory.”
Thank you, Marc, for sharing your story and experiences with us and we at Glass of Bubbly look forward to speaking with you again soon!
