11th March 2024
The World of Wine is beautifully showcased by an army of talented Sommeliers, who help the consumer discover their next favourite bottle, understand the different regions and pair a delicious meal with the right Glass of Bubbly.
In this feature, I speak with a man from the United Arab Emirates, who has helped many people to discover the vast world of Wines and Sparkling Wines, his name is Bhavesh Kafle, let’s find out about his life as a Sommelier.
Tell Us About Yourself
“My name is Bhavesh Kafle and I was born in Nepal. I work as Senior Sommelier in Bungalo34 by Tashas Dubai UAE. I completed a Diploma in Hotel Management in Nepal. I started my career as a Bartender but in 2019 I had an opportunity to start a new journey as a Junior Sommelier. Since that opportunity and until this day, I am still as passionate and willing to learn about wine as much as I can.”
Do You Remember Your First Experience With Sparkling Wine? When It Was And What Kind Of Wine It Was?
“Actually I don’t remember when I tried my first sparkling wine, but my first experience of sabrage in 2019 was unforgettable. Of course I kept the head of that sparkling wine as a memory. “
What Inspired You To Become a Sommelier?
“As a bartender, I didn’t have any idea about wine. The opportunity to become a Sommelier took place when I completed my WSET Level 2. The course sparked my thirst for all things wine, never to look back. Big thanks to each and every single person who became my inspiration and helped guide me to reach this level.”
During Your Time As A Sommelier, What’s The Most Surprising & Interesting Thing You’ve Learnt?
“A Sommelier is not an easy profession, it takes lots of time, study, dedication and passion; you have to know the grapes off by heart. The most interesting thing is that no matter how expensive wines are, we as sommeliers always give guidance on what is the perfect pairing with dishes, as well as marrying it with the guests’ preference. The most surprising and interesting part is that you will get to know about each place and gain knowledge of the terroir, climate, atmosphere, altitude and latitude and how these factors affect the grape’s profile and aromas.”
What Sparkling Wine Producing Countries or Regions Hold A Special Place In Your Heart?
“Champagne has always been my first preference. The way of making through traditional method and the aromas and flavors coming through second fermentation such as toast, brioche, bread etc. Champagne is always there when it comes to celebration.”
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Sommeliers?
“Keep on studying, collect knowledge about wines and give the correct direction to your guests about their food pairing experience. They will remember you and come back to visit you from time to time, instead of pushing sales and never seeing them again.”
Where’s The Most Memorable Place You’ve Enjoyed A Glass of Bubbly?
“The most memorable time where I enjoyed a glass of bubbly was on my anniversary.”
Thank you, Bhavesh, for sharing your words, knowledge and experiences with us and we at Glass of Bubbly wish you the very best for the future!
