Interview With A Sommelier – Dusica Jovanovic

The World of Wine is beautifully showcased by an army of talented Sommeliers, who help the consumer discover their next favourite bottle, understand the different regions and pair a delicious meal with the right Glass of Bubbly.

In this feature, I speak with a woman who has helped many people to discover the vast world of Wines and Sparkling Wines, her name is Dusica Jovanovic, let’s find out a bit about her life as a Sommelier.

Tell Us About Yourself

“My name is Dusica Jovanovic and I am a sommelier from Belgrade, Serbia. I am a member of SERSA- Serbian Sommelier Association.

As a sommelier, I had the opportunity to represent and work with plenty of different wineries, both Serbian and foreign (exp. Eden, Capo, Nals Margreid, Pontet-Canet, Vincic, Aleksic…).

After graduating in World Literature, I decided to piece together both of the things that I love, wine and literature, hence I created an Instagram profile ‘lovewinesoul’ on which I write and post content related to wine.”

Do You Remember Your First Experience With Sparkling Wine? When It Was And What Kind Of Wine It Was?

“My first experience with sparkling wine was at one of my family reunions. The wine that was served was ‘La Marchesina, Gran Dessert’, a sweet and bubbly Italian wine. Since then, for every celebration, we always need to have a sparkling wine at our house.”

What Inspired You To Become a Sommelier?

“Growing up with a grandfather who owned a vineyard and who was very passionate about wine, it was destined for me to continue his path and spread everywhere around this love towards the wine.”

During Your Time As A Sommelier, What’s The Most Surprising & Interesting Thing You’ve Learnt?

“During this wine journey, I have learned that we need to seek very thoroughly because the finest wine jewels are hidden in the small family wineries. With their incredible love and passion towards the wine, every sample they produce becomes a masterpiece.”

What Sparkling Wine Producing Countries or Regions Hold A Special Place In Your Heart?

“Special place in my heart goes to Italy, specifically to the Prosecco region in northeastern Italy in Veneto. I also need to single out exceptional sparkling wines from my country, Serbia. We are maybe at the beginning of the wine industry, but we have plenty of incredible wineries such as: Kovacevic, Aleksandrovic, Deuric, Vrt, and Vinum… which are making splendid sparkling wines. As a sommelier, I would like to represent and show to foreign markets our wineries, because we have great potential and a bright future ahead of us.”

Where’s The Most Memorable Place You’ve Enjoyed A Glass of Bubbly?

“To travel and to drink a glass of wine near the sea is one of my special rituals in life. But to celebrate love and life there is no better place than the one where our family and friends are, so if I have to choose one place where I enjoy a glass of bubbly wine the most, that would be my home.”
