The World of Wine is beautifully showcased by an army of talented Sommeliers, who help the consumer discover their next favourite bottle, understand the different regions and pair a delicious meal with the right Glass of Bubbly.
In this feature, I speak with a woman from England, who has helped many people to discover the vast world of Wines and Sparkling Wines, her name is Gosia Widdison, let’s find out about her life as a Sommelier.
Tell Us About Yourself
“Hi all, My name is Gosia and I am a sommelier. I was born and raised in Poland where wine culture was not a thing. I did not try any quality wine until I moved to London after finishing school. Although I enjoyed drinking wine and working in front of house during my studies, a career as a sommelier was not my first choice. At the time my interests were centred around my field of studies International Relations and European Politics. After university, I did a year long internship in Cape Town, South Africa. I fell in love with the country and moved there permanently. While looking for work at an NGO which proved difficult I applied to work ‘temporarily’ at The Test Kitchen by Luke Dale Roberts. This is where my career took a turn, I was working at one of the best restaurants in the world. I lived in the heart of South African Winelands, I was exposed to incredible wines and got to meet all the passionate winemakers. I was hungry for knowledge so completed all WSET courses one after another, including the Diploma.”
Do You Remember Your First Experience With Sparkling Wine? When It Was And What Kind Of Wine It Was?
“I do remember my first experience with sparkling wine. Unfortunately not for good reasons. It was so-called ‘Russian Champagne’. Horrible stuff. :D”
What Inspired You To Become a Sommelier?
“My inspiration comes from people. There are a few women who inspired me in my sommelier journey like Cathy Marston, the owner of The Wine Centre and Carolyn Martin from Creation Wines in Hemel-en-AArde Valley. Both played a pivotal role in motivating me to achieve my goals.
Those who attend to the vines and make the wine are definitely another source of inspiration. These are passionate people and except obviously tasting the wine I love to hear the stories, which I then can share with our guests.”
During Your Time As A Sommelier, What’s The Most Surprising & Interesting Thing You’ve Learnt?
“White wine spritzer with lemonade :D”
What Sparkling Wine Producing Countries or Regions Hold A Special Place In Your Heart?
“South Africa will always have a special place in my heart.”
What Advice Would You Give Inspiring Sommeliers?
“The world is your oyster. We should consider ourselves lucky to be living in times where travel is so affordable and we can visit so many wine regions.”
Where’s The Most Memorable Place You’ve Enjoyed A Glass of Bubbly?
“There have been many occasions but the latest one that comes to my mind is Christmas Day at home last year. Dom Pérignon 2008 with Buckwheat blinis, smoked salmon, creme fraiche and caviar was a delight.
Thank you, Gosia, for sharing your words, knowledge and experiences with us and we at Glass of Bubbly wish you the very best for the future!
