10th January 2024
The World of Wine is beautifully showcased by an army of talented Sommeliers, who help the consumer discover their next favourite bottle, understand the different regions and pair a delicious meal with the right Glass of Bubbly.
In this feature, I speak with a man who has helped many people to discover the vast world of Wines and Sparkling Wines, his name is Miguel Pontrelli, let’s find out a bit about his life as a Sommelier.
Tell Us About Yourself
“Hello, Glass of Bubbly lovers, I’m Miguel Pontrelli a Venezuelan sommelier currently living in Chile, exploring its magnificent wines and valleys. For the past year, I’ve worked at Les Dix Vins, Santiago’s leading international wine bar and French cheese importer. I absolutely adore food and its cultural heritage and that’s why I take the name @theDeliriousFoodie on Instagram.”
Do You Remember Your First Experience With Sparkling Wine? When It Was And What Kind Of Wine It Was?
“My first experience with sparkling wine was during my childhood; I vividly recall how both of my grandfathers enjoyed Champagne, Prosecco and Cava at family gatherings and celebrations, occasionally they poured me a little in a tiny shaped flute glass for the toast. Having European and Slavic ancestry helped me understand at a young age how alcohol wasn’t just a pleasure object but more of a supporting feature to the finer moments in life.”
What Inspired You To Become a Sommelier?
“I was inspired to become a sommelier through my ever-growing love for wine. From childhood experiences with family to my own journey as an adult. I remember distinctly after having ‘Memorias 2013’ a beautiful blend from Pirque in Chile’s Maipo Valley that I decided to learn more and taste broader than I had until then. I felt like I had previously missed out on what the world of wine had to offer.”
During Your Time As A Sommelier, What’s The Most Surprising & Interesting Thing You’ve Learnt?
“What has impressed me most about wine during my time as a sommelier is its versatility. I truly believe the depth and liveliness found in wine can’t be found elsewhere, it’s the best beverage for harmonization with meals (diversity and styles) and also makes for a pleasurable conversation companion.”
What Sparkling Wine Producing Countries or Regions Hold A Special Place In Your Heart?
“France takes my heart with sparkling wines. I love the freshness of a Crémant d’Alsace and the structure of a nice Champagne, recently I’ve enjoyed récoltant-manipulant (Grower) Champagne more so than the big houses and I’ve been exploring the Tasmanian bubbly scene too.”
Where’s The Most Memorable Place You’ve Enjoyed A Glass of Bubbly?
“I don’t think I’ve had a top memorable place for a glass of bubbly, all have been very enjoyable. Though I will say the moment I hold closest to my heart was during my grandfather’s last New Year’s Eve.”
Thank you, Miguel, for sharing your words, knowledge and experiences with us and we at Glass of Bubbly wish you the very best for the future!
