In this feature, I speak with a man from India, who has helped many people to discover the vast world of Wines and Sparkling Wines, his name is Sachin Chandra, let’s find out about his life as a Sommelier.

Tell Us About Yourself

“I’m Sachin Chandra from a small city in India, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. I did Hotel Management at IHM AURANGABAD, Maharashtra. Then started to study wines during the COVID period, starting with WSET LEVEL 3.”

Do You Remember Your First Experience With Sparkling Wine? When It Was And What Kind Of Wine It Was?

“I had a glass of Sula Brut at one of the wine tasting sessions at the college. After tasting I was intuitive to know how it was made and how these flavour are coming along with the sparkling sensations.”

What Inspired You To Become a Sommelier?

“During my internship at one of the Star properties in India, I was serving wines to the elite people. A Sommelier from the property was talking to the guests about the wines and their knowledge of them. This made me carry my passion, to know something different and follow this career.”

During Your Time As A Sommelier, What’s The Most Surprising & Interesting Thing You’ve Learnt?

“Usage of the Coravin. I was fortunate to taste the oldest Champagnes during an event. I was surprised to realise the difference in each Champagne from different vintages tasting dramatically different due to the climate & weather of the region.”

What Sparkling Wine Producing Countries or Regions Hold A Special Place In Your Heart?

“Champagne, Loire & Spain.”

Where’s The Most Memorable Place You’ve Enjoyed A Glass of Bubbly?

“During an event at the Four Seasons, having a 48 month aged Cava.”
