Interview With A Sommelier – Valentin Bunea

In this feature, I speak with a man from, Bucharest, Romania, who has helped many people to discover the vast world of Wines and Sparkling Wines, his name is Valentin Bunea, let’s find out about his life as a Sommelier.

Tell Us About Yourself

“My name is Valentin Bunea, born in 1986 and I am from Bucharest, Romania. I have 2 brothers ( 1 elder and 1 twin ). I’m currently working in The Petersham restaurant in Covent Garden as Head Sommelier.”

Do You Remember Your First Experience With Sparkling Wine? When It Was And What Kind Of Wine It Was?

“My first Sparkling Wine experience was New Year’s Eve 2004 with a local producer from Romania. In 2014 I was working in LPM and had the opportunity to try Champagne Salon 2007 Blanc de Blancs which blew my mind and my tastebuds.”

What Inspired You To Become a Sommelier?

“My inspiration was my F and B Manager ( Somm+ Cigar Somm ) who sent me to WSET Levels 1 and 2 where I learned about wines. After that my curiosity about this topic made me follow this path.”

During Your Time As A Sommelier, What’s The Most Surprising & Interesting Thing You’ve Learnt?

“I was surprised to learn about the Icewine from Canada, how it is produced and the passion of those producers who are making this unique product. I am a big fan of it.”

What Sparkling Wine Producing Countries or Regions Hold A Special Place In Your Heart?

“I enjoy all the regions from all the producing countries and depending on the occasion, I consume Prosseco to vintage Champagne. My current go-to region is Franciacorta.”

What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Sommeliers?

“My advice is to have a mentor, stay humble, study, be serious and go to tastings because like this you improve your skills.”

Where’s The Most Memorable Place You’ve Enjoyed A Glass of Bubbly?

” Was in two places: Burj al Arab ( Skyview bar ) and 122nd floor Burj Khalifa ( Atmosphere lounge bar ) both in Dubai.”
