This series of Winemaker Interviews will help you uncover the vast world and skills of how the artists passionate about wine make the world a bubbly place.
In this article we speak with Lilia Perez, an amazing Winemaker from California, USA. Let’s discover a little about her time in the Wine Industry.
Who Are You, Lilia Perez?
“I was born in Sacramento, California, and raised in Mexico City. I´ve been working in the wine industry for more than 12 years now and I have lived in four different countries – Mexico, Portugal, France, and now in the USA – these life opportunities have offered me the chance to adapt and appreciate different cultures, speak four different languages, have family and friends all over and enjoy a wide diversity of food and wines. I describe myself as optimistic and passionate for life, always open for a new adventure!”
How Did You Become Involved In The Wine Industry?
“I fell in love with wine and everything about it while studying for my hospitality management degree in Mexico City. I was lucky to have amazing enology and viticulture teachers who were passionate about it and made me start thinking of dedicating myself to this industry. I got my first job at the Mexican Wine Council as Mexican Wine Promotion Coordinator and that was the beginning of a never-ending story of learning and getting more passionate about wine.”
As A Winemaker, What Has Been Your Hardest Obstacle To Overcome In Producing Wine?
“I can talk about my experience making wine in Long Island, NY. This was a big challenge for every vintage, as weather conditions during harvest time could be extreme, constant rain and humidity can affect the grape quality very easily. Walking the vineyard, watching and tasting the grape bunches is crucial to decide the best time to harvest before bad weather conditions affect the crop. Good quality grapes will make a better and tasty wine!”
How Do You Determine When Your Wine Is Ready To Drink?
“When it is pleasant to drink and enjoy. When it is balanced and well-integrated.”
What Part Of The Wine Making Process Do You Enjoy The Most?
“Grape harvest decision-making is my favorite part of making wine, as well as the middle of the fermentation process, watching the bubbles as a result of the yeast doing its work to convert grape juice into wine!”
