Interview With An Oenologist Chris Apidopoulos

The World of Wine is marvelously kept in its purest form thanks to the hard work and studies of Oenologists around the world, in this article, we speak with a man who has helped encourage the growth of healthy grapes for the production of wine, his name is Chris Apidopoulos. Now let’s find out a bit about his life and career as an Oenologist.

Tell Us About Yourself

“My name is Chris Apidopoulos and I am 22 years old. I have a degree in Oenology. I recently started working in a vineyard named ‘Château Nikos Lazaridis’ as a person in charge of the newly opened department that specialises in champagne. In the meantime I have my own blog, writing about wines, named ‘The Son of Wine’.”

How Did You Become Involved In The Wine Industry?

“Well, while I was younger I would watch some TV shows and documentaries, on how the wine is made, on the procedure of the harvest and in general all about the Greek vineyards. This made me really curious about the field and I decided to visit some of them in order to see that in person. That was something like an enlightenment for me, I realised that I had found my purpose.”

As An Oenologist, What Challenges Do You Find Yourself Facing Each Year?

“Working in a vineyard is a challenge in itself. Especially for me that I have just started my career. Every day is different. New challenges occur daily, starting from the harvest, proceeding to the grapes being pressed and then placed in the tanks to get transformed into a tasty and delicate wine. Every day is a new experience that I treasure.”

How Do You See the Future Of Greek Sparkling Wine?

“Despite the fact that in Greece there are a lot of extraordinary varieties of vines that produce great wines, one of the best being ‘Xinomavro’ for me, in the field of the champagne there is not an equivalent development. In the last few years we can see some vineyards starting to experiment, slowly getting there and producing some great champagnes. Nowadays there are some Greek vineyards that have invested in the field and are doing a great job with very tasty and ‘bubbly’ results.”

Where’s The Most Memorable Place You’ve Enjoyed A Glass of Bubbly?

“Now that I am thinking of this… I have tasted a lot of different champagnes, in various occasions such as celebrations for new year’s eve, graduations and many more… But I think that the most memorable one for me, hasn’t come yet. I am sure that when I will have the chance to taste the very first sip of the champagne that I created, no matter where I am, this one will be the most memorable one.”

Thank you, Chris, for sharing your words, knowledge and experiences with us and we at Glass of Bubbly wish you the very best for the future!
