Latest Stats Reveal Prosecco DOC is still the UK’s Favourite
23rd May 2022
The Prosecco DOC Consortium has revealed the latest data on Prosecco DOC sales globally during 2021. Worldwide, the results show that there has been a 25% increase in sales with a total of 627.5 million certified bottles of Prosecco DOC placed on the market, says Stefano Zanette, President of the Prosecco DOC Consortium.
Once again, the UK has proved itself to be the greatest lover of Prosecco DOC in the world with a near 6% volume increase of sales over 2020. In total 122.2 million bottles of Prosecco DOC were exported to the UK last year, accounting for 24.5% of all Prosecco DOC exports.
Over the course of lockdown in 2020, the number of consumer consumption of Prosecco DOC at home grew the UK. As restaurants, hotels and bars gradually reopened, both on and off sales have increased, generating an encouraging demand for Prosecco DOC.
Although the UK bought in the most Prosecco DOC, the USA had the biggest jump in sales (+ 44%), then France with 34% increase, followed by Germany (+ 9%).
“Over the past year, one of our priorities has been the achievement of territorial certification for our three pillars of sustainability – an unprecedented goal, difficult in itself and, in our case, made even harder given the Consortium’s size – on which we are achieving more than encouraging results,” says Zanette.
“These numbers demonstrate the huge success of the appellation and also demonstrate its commitment to sustainability – an overused and still often trivialized word – that led the Consortium to introduce the term ‘durability’ to emphasize its challenge towards constant innovation, involving the productive system in a path of environmental, social and economic responsibility.”
“The success of our Denomination is certainly confirmed by the encouraging numbers whose growth, at the moment, does not seem to stop, but which must be handled with extreme care, thanks to the involvement of the authorities and producers, in order to pass on this heritage to the future generations. It is clear that what some call the “Prosecco phenomenon” is neither the result of random chance nor of a passing trend. These are results that underlie great teamwork, a commitment that involves the entire supply chain and that is bringing awareness to cohesion, an indispensable element to face heavy challenges such as the conquest of large markets,” Zanette concludes.
