Aldo Sohm

Sohm is a sommelier with decades of experience. At only 19 years old, he became interested in wine after working at a restaurant. He would frequently be visited by two Swiss couples who asked him what to drink with their meal. He soon started studying wine and caught the wine bug. He also purchased a 1983 Darmagi bottle from Angelo Gaja in 1990.

Sohm is a legend in the sommelier community and an example of turning a hobby into a dream career. One example of his passion turning into a life achievement was when he won the World’s Best Sommelier Competition in 2008. Besides following his Instagram, you can find him at Aldo Sohm Wine Bar, and also as a director of Le Bernardin, a four-star restaurant. Both establishments are in New York City, so if you can get a reservation, they are worth checking out. You can follow Sohm on his Instagram page and learn what wines he is trying currently.

Ian Cauble

Ian Cauble, a relatively young man in the sommelier world, has an extensive portfolio. In 2011, he was recognized as the Best Young Sommelier in the World Under 35 Years Old and has been on many 40 under 40 lists. He is also the leading person in the 2012 documentary Somm. This documentary followed four candidates as they passed the Master Sommelier examination, known for its difficulty. Ian eventually passed the exam and became the 197th Master Sommelier.

In a coda to the film, one year later, Ian reattempts the exam and becomes the 197th Master Sommelier, one of the youngest. He also runs SommSelect, a service that delivers wines to people’s doorsteps. You can find Ian on his Instagram as he travels, posts family photos, and shares his love of his favorite wines.

Casleah Herwaldt

Casleah grew up around a vineyard, and from there, she knew she wanted to become a sommelier. While she tried her career in healthcare, she soon realized that wine was her life’s goal. While many sommeliers wore their knowledge on their belts, Casleah wanted to be more approachable. She wants to let anyone from all walks of life learn about wine and the many trends surrounding it. One way she does this is by sharing virtual wine events and tastings.

She is a Certified Sommelier, completing level 3 of WSET and working in the level 4, or Diploma, program. Her carrer has lead her to being a floor sommelier working for a Michelin Star chef, hosted many sold-out events, and much more.

Her publication, By the Stem, is worth checking out. She is sharing her travels and knowledge with the world on her Instagram.

Michael Engelmann

Engelmann hails from eastern France with decades of sommelier experience. There’s a reason people follow him for his expertise. He has worked as a Wine Director at The Modern in New York. He also has won many awards relating to wine, such as the Johnston Medal and being declared a Rudd Scholar. His career has also led him to be a judge, guest speaker, educator, you name it!

Because of his deep expertise, many people follow him on Instagram for his wine opinions. Please give him a follow and learn something new.

Jack Beguedou

Now for something different. Most of these sommeliers focus on wine, but here’s one who focuses on whiskey. Beguedou is from West Africa and went to the US at 20. Due to the lack of black representation, he wanted to become a voice in the spirit industry, and his brand, The Hood Sommelier, managed to bring a new spin to the sommelier world. Beguedou has built a spirited, no pun intended, community, and hosts the Afrofusion dinner series. This series looks at whiskey paired with African food, highlighting chefs who usually don’t get attention.

You can find him on his Instagram account, which is a fun, knowledgeable space. He posts whiskey, travel photos, and even memes. So, if you’re looking for something stronger than wine, give him a follow.

Brian McClintic

Finally, we look at Brian McClintic. He also appeared in the SOMM documentary and its sequel. Since then, he has become a Master Sommelier and has had many business ventures. He co-founded Les Marchands Wine Bar & Merchant and launched Viticole. This is a wine club and subscription service. It also doubles as a travel blog. McClintic is also known for traveling to vineyards and exploring nature. With his long hair, he sometimes ties in a man-bun and beard; he is a freer spirit than some of the sommeliers on this list. Follow him and see where he goes next.
