Jean-Claude’s involvement in the making of sparkling wine is very much linked to his passion for Italy. So Venice and the Baccaro (small Venetian bars where they serve as an aperitif a small quantity of Champagne in a large glass) inspired him in 2001, together with his American importer and also his mentor Georgio Grai, to create a Prosecco. This was just a bit of fun. In 2011, after 10 years of frustration at not being able to produce a good sparkling wine in the Languedoc-Roussillon, he seized the opportunity of acquiring one of the best sparkling wine estates in Limoux. With considerable self-sacrifice and with the clear objective of creating a complex, rich and pleasant sparkling wine, making no compromises, Jean-Claude Mas has now produced a range of sparkling wines using all his “tête de cuvées” : Methode Traditionel, Crémant de Limoux and Blanquette de Limoux, available in the UK under the labels “Château Martinolles” and “Prima Perla”.
