Pol Roger, The King of Champagnes
27th July 2014
I don’t know what it is about Pol Roger, commonly dubbed, “The Gentleman’s Champagne” that really resonates with me. It is the only Champagne I have ever tasted that really ZINGS you at the front and back of the palette with it’s dry, citrus but very complex bouquet.
Founded in 1849, Pol Roger is one of the few “Grande Marque Champagne” houses still family owned. Winston Churchill and the British royal family are known to be fond of the Champagne that is described as being “hand made” in the way that the bottles are hand turned at specific intervals during production. The Champagne, which is a blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay grapes are produced in vinyards that are amongst the highest ranking in the world. The family is said to still own 50% of the vinyards used in production.
This Champagne, with it’s characteristic white foil, is not a cheap Champagne with a price tag of over $40. It is the perfect bottle to celebrate with and one that has truly passed the test of time.
