Scrooged – Christmas Movie Cocktails
22nd December 2022
Scrooged, released on the 23rd of November, 1988, with a budget of $32 million, it grossed $100.3 million worldwide, in part by starring the incredible Ghostbusting, lasagna-loving, someone who truly knows how to make the most out of a single day, Bill Murray – who played Frank Cross, a cynical and selfish television executive, who, just like Ebenezer Scrooge, is visited by a succession of ghosts on Christmas Eve intent on helping him regain his Christmas spirit.
Based on the immortal work by Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol.
It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Makeup, but lost to the still widely popular, cult classic film Beetlejuice.
When marketing the film, they made references to Murray’s successful role in Ghostbusters to help entice the audience in, such as this tagline “Bill Murray is back among the ghosts, only this time, it’s three against one”.
Scrooged earned $18.6 million over its Thanksgiving-extended opening weekend in the United States at 1,262 theatres. It was the highest-earning film that weekend, ahead of The Land Before Time ($8.1 million) and Oliver & Company ($6.3 million). Scrooged became the fourth highest-earning opening weekend of that year, although only finished 13th in the highest-grossing films of 1988.
The film would then be released on DVD on the 31st of October, 2006, called the Yule Love It! edition, then released on Blu-ray on the 1st of November, 2011.
