Smith & Evans, English Sparkling Wine
11th May 2015
Smith & Evans is a winery in Somerset founded by Guy Smith and Laura Evans.
They first planted their Higher Plot vineyard in 2008, after a four year search to find an area to produce the highest possible quality sparkling wine.
The White Lias Limestone Ridge of Higher Plot Farm has long been recognised as a special place that achieves early ripening and high quality fruit. The free draining Calcerous Limestone soil is identical to some of the world’s greatest vineyard sites and the local climate is one of the best in the UK for growing grapes.
If you want to see the vineyards for yourself, Smith & Evans have a wonderful detached barn conversion available to rent out for a short stay.
‘The flavours and aromas in our sparkling wines are created from a blend of ripe Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier Grapes. We planted Burgundian clones as they produce a fuller flavour.
We don’t produce homogeneous wines year in year out as we are determined to fully express the character of each season and so in some years the wine may be an iridescent bright white and in others it may have a delightful pink tinge depending on what the grapes decided to do that particular year. Some years are fuller and rounder, others elegant and focused.’
