Interview With A Sommelier Alessandro Gaboardi

The World of Wine is beautifully showcased by an army of talented Sommeliers, who help the consumer discover their next favourite bottle, understand the different regions and pair a delicious meal with the right Glass of Bubbly.

In this feature, I speak with a gentleman from Italy, who has helped many people to discover the vast world of Wines and Sparkling Wines, his name is Alessandro Gaboardi, let’s find out about his life as a Sommelier.

Tell Us About Yourself & What Inspired You To Become a Sommelier?

“I’ve been fascinated by wine since I was young, even though my family had no direct connection to the wine industry.

Wine was present at our family meals, especially during special occasions, where choosing the right bottle to pair with food always added an extra layer of excitement.

In high school, my interest grew further when chemistry classes introduced me to the fermentation process and the art of brewing and winemaking. Later on, this curiosity led me to explore various styles of wine, discovering the complexity of aromas and flavours by attending classes, walk around tastings and wine events.

As my knowledge grew, friends began to ask me for advice on food and wine pairings at dinners and parties. Their positive feedback encouraged me to consider becoming a sommelier; this would allow me to share my passion and insights about wine with others.

After achieving the award with the Italian Sommelier Association (A.I.S.), I then wanted to broaden my knowledge from an international perspective, so I went along the path that took me to the WSET Diploma in Wine. At the present time, I am working as a Marketing Expert, but alongside this I also host private wine events, judge at wine awards, and write about wine on my blog.

Do You Remember Your First Experience With Sparkling Wine? When It Was And What Kind Of Wine It Was?

“Sparkling wine has always been a central part of the celebrations in my life. As a child, I remember the joy and excitement among the adults when they popped a cork at family gatherings, whether for my parents’ birthdays or during Christmas lunches. These moments – filled with happiness and shared with loved ones – were usually highlighted by the festive wines, Prosecco and Franciacorta. Even now, I cherish creating that same warm atmosphere with family and friends; there’s something about opening a bottle of bubbly that instantly lifts the spirit and adds a sparkle to any gathering.”

What Sparkling Wine Producing Countries or Regions Hold A Special Place In Your Heart?

“Trentino, the sparkling wine region in northeast Italy, and its renowned Trentodoc trademark, hold a special place in my heart. I’ve spent many summer and winter holidays there, captivated by its stunning landscape, with towering mountains surrounding meticulously kept vineyards on steep slopes.

Trentino is also where one of the first Italian traditional-method sparkling wine was crafted in the early 20th century. Today, the region boasts both large and small producers who coexist, offering an impressive variety of styles for sparkling wine enthusiasts. I particularly enjoy discovering wines from smaller, perhaps lesser-known producers, as it allows me to appreciate the distinct character (vibrant acidity and clear fruit aromas and flavours) that makes each bottle unique.

What Advice Would You Give Inspiring Sommeliers?

“Becoming a sommelier is an intense yet rewarding journey into the captivating world of wine, where knowledge, sensory skills, and interpersonal abilities are essential for achieving and maintaining a high level of professionalism.

Mastery of key wine regions and grape varieties is fundamental, along with a thorough understanding of the winemaking process, which reveals much about each wine’s character. Additionally, broadening your expertise to include other beverages – such as spirits, beer, cocktails, sake, tea, and even water – has become increasingly important.

The wine world is always evolving, with new trends, regions, and styles emerging regularly. This requires a commitment to ongoing learning and continuous education.

As a sommelier, your goal is to help guests find their perfect drink, bringing wines to life through stories and descriptions that are engaging and accessible. Avoid overly complex language, focusing instead on creating an enjoyable experience and delivering exceptional service rather than simply showcasing your expertise.
