UK Sales of Sparkling Wine Hit Record £1 Billion
14th March 2016
Sales of sparkling wine in the UK have reached £1 billion for the first time – and that’s not including Champagne sales.
Retail sales of sparkling wine hit £709m, with on-trade sales (restaurants, bars, hotels etc) adding another £348m according to the Wine and Spirit Trade Association Market Report.
‘Sparkling wine’ refers to Prosecco, Cava, Crémant, English sparkling wine and the many other sparkling wines from around the world.
Retail sales rose by £20% (255,000hl in total, apparently enough to fill an Olympic swimming pool), while on-trade sales have soared by a massive 49%.
UK is also currently the number 1 export market for Champagne, which has seen a 5% retail and 13% on-trade increase in sales. It seems we can’t get enough of bubbly!
