In this exclusive feature on Glass of Bubbly we travel to Germany, visiting Weingut Gröhl to speak with Franziska Gröhl, one of the family members and future owners, who is in charge of the Marketing and Distribution at Weingut Gröhl, let’s discover a little about her life, her journey in the industry and one of her most memorable bubbly memories.
It’s Great To Speak With You, Franziska, Can You Tell Us A Little About Yourself & How Your Incredible Journey Into The Wine Industry Began?
“I grew up in our family estate and helped with events, in the vineyard and bottling as a child and teenager. After graduating from high school and spending half a year abroad, I decided to study International Wine Business in Geisenheim. So I started my journey into the world of wine at a very early age, or rather it has always been a part of me.”
Do You Remember Your First Experience With Sparkling Wine? When It Was And What Kind Of Label It Was?
“As sparkling wine made according to the traditional bottle fermentation method has been an important part of our winery for a long time, the task of riddling sparkling wine was one of the tasks I experienced early on.”
How Rewarding And Challenging Is Managing Your Own Winery?
“As a family winery, we have been growing wine in Weinolsheim (Rheinhessen) since 1625. So for 13 generations, we have been doing everything we can to produce the perfect bottle of wine.
This includes tasting many wines and discussing them. With two generations and four different characters, there is always a wide variety of opinions and ideas.
But our common goal always remains in focus: wines & sparkling wines that inspire
It’s not always easy to run a winery, but with passion and a goal, it’s incredibly fulfilling.”
When It Comes To Pairing Your Sparkling Wine With Food, Do You Have Any Favourite Combinations That You Would Personally Recommend?
“Sparkling wine is great to combine with food. I love the combination of an exciting brut nature sparkling wine and seafood, such as mussels and prawns.
But there are also many other delicious options for food pairing with sparkling wine.”
Can You Share With Us Some Of The Countries And Locations Around The World That You Can Enjoy A Glass Of Weingut Gröhl?
“You can enjoy our wines and sparkling wines in the following countries: Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, Czech Republic, USA and Korea. Possibly in other countries in the future. And of course in Germany.”
What Future Plans Can Enthusiasts Of Weingut Gröhl Look Forward To In The Coming Years?
“As the 13th generation, my brother and I still have lots of plans and ideas. It never gets boring with us.
Even in the sparkling wine sector, our yeast storage (longest storage currently 48 months) is getting longer and longer and the sparkling wines are becoming more complex and exciting.
So stay tuned!”
Can You Share With Us One Of The Most Memorable Experiences You’ve Enjoyed With A Glass of Bubbly?
“That really is a difficult question, because many of our good experiences start with a glass of sparkling wine. My mum’s philosophy is ‘Sparkling wine and joie de vivre bubble in my veins.’”
