What Sparkling Wine Goes With Banoffee Pie?
17th May 2022
Pairing a deliciously sweet and creamy Banoffee Pie with a Gold Medal Dessert Sparkling Wine, combining the powers of British Dessert and Slovenian Sparkling Wine.
If you’ve never heard of, or seen a Banoffee Pie before, it is made from Bananas, Caramel Sauce, and Cream on a Buttery Biscuit Base, you can also include Chocolate or Coffee if want some extra flavours.
The name ‘Banoffee’ is actually a combination of the two main ingredients, banana and toffee – ‘ban-offee’
The invention of the Banoffee Pie has already been claimed, credit goes to Nigel Mackenzie and Ian Dowding, the owner and chef of The Hungry Monk Restaurant in Jevington, East Sussex, England, which is now closed. They adapted an unreliable American recipe by the name of ‘Blum’s Coffee Toffee Pie’ in 1971, before landing on banana, they experimented with apple and orange, but Dowding later said that “straight away we knew we had got it right” when Mackenzie suggested banana, he also came up with the name.
Many countries have adopted the Banoffee Pie, including America, where in 1984 American supermarkets started selling it as American Pie, this caused Nigel Mackenzie to publicly offer a £10,000 prize to anyone who could disprove their claim to be the original English inventors.

Banoffee Pie and Sparkling Wine Pairing
Pairing Notes – “The Sparkling Wine expects it to be an easy Pairing, but it has to take a step back with the stronger flavours of Banoffee Pie remaining in the spotlight, the red berry flavours are then taken under the wing of the Banana within the Banoffee Pie, giving the dish a subtle red berry character.”
