Slovenian Wine

Slovenia’s Wine Story dates back somewhere between the 5th and 4th century BC, predating any influence from the Romans and can be traced all the way to the Celtic and Illyrian tribes who cultivated vines for wine production.

Slovenia also houses the World’s Oldest Vine, planted over 450 years ago, at the end of the Middle Ages during the Turkish invasions.

It’s referred to as ‘The Old Vine’ and it even has its own dedicated museum.

Love Wine, Love Slovenia, is a perfect statement for this wine producing country, with approximately 28,000 registered wineries in Slovenia. They produce between 80 and 90 million litres a year from around 22,300 ha of vineyards.

About 75% of the wine produced in Slovenia, is consumed within Slovenia.

• Deželno Vino PGO – Country Wine
• Kakovostno Vino ZGP – Quality Wine
• Vrhunsko Vino ZGP – Premium Quality Wine

The Slovenians use the following four words to describe their sweetness levels:

• Suho – Dry
• Polsuho – Medium-Dry
• Polsladko – Medium-Sweet
• Sladko – Sweet
