Ultimate Guide to Champagne Dom Pérignon Vintages / Price Values
14th December 2022
One of the most famous Champagne labels, and even making it into several James Bond movies, is Dom Pérignon which for many wine professionals is very much the best producer. A household name and instantly recognisable branding, Dom Pérignon holds much fame and acclaim including probably the most famous quotes of Champagne – “Come Quickly I am Tasting The Stars“.
Dom Pérignon is a Champagne label that is in fact owned by Moët & Chandon. It is widely claimed that the monk, Dom Pérignon, founded bubbles in wine (sparkling wine), though a suitably romantic story this might be, the history of sparkling wine goes back prior to this said date of 1697.
Only vintages are produced under the Dom Pérignon label and it is said that each vintage made will age perfectly well for 20+ years. Rosé, limited edition / special releases and Plénitude 2 ranges can also be found and which some bottles are very expensive – The 1996 Dom Perignon Rose Gold Methuselah is the most expensive bottle of Dom Perignon ever sold at $49,000 a bottle. Dom Pérignon is aged for a minimum of 7 years in bottle before release.
Below we take a look at the vintage range of Dom Pérignon with estimated prices* and any attributing facts. Please remember that the value of anything is really down to what people wish to pay – prices go up and down and certainly some of the prices below, depending how long in the future you find yourself reading this article, will likely rise as their rarity grows. Prices will vary too very much depending on quality of the bottle such as what storage history it has, any loss of wine from oxidisation (ullage), damage to label / cork etc (also beware of fakes!).
The guide prices below are assuming a 75cl bottle is in good to excellent condition with evidence of correct storage and with no damage. The price is a realistic selling price assuming the buyer will be in between the ‘price point’ of an end consumer / fine wine merchant. Professional selling format comes in to play for the older vintages and we must consider options such as placing them within fine wine auctions, the younger vintages most likely the price is set and selling avenues such as online communications or even via eBay / Facebook marketplace / Amazon / Facebook Champagne Collecting groups or selling to your wine friends and family will be used.
Champagne Dom Pérignon 1921 – Two lots of vintage 1921 were sold by Christies auction back in 2004 with a price realised of 7,638 USD (£6,172). Considering that we are now nearly 20 years after so the rarity has increased. The unique tasting experience this vintage holds (it was initially released in 1936 on New Years Eve), and it’s place as the holy grail for wine enthusiasts, the price could easily be around £8,000 – £10,000.
Champagne Dom Pérignon 1926 – There is little reference to this vintage online though guide price via wine-searcher states a value of £15,542 per bottle which might be a touch high. Sothebys auction has a past listing of a 1926 vintage with a guide price of 11,000 – 15,000 HKD (£1,143-£1,559.14) though it is stated that the bottle is ‘Reverse ullage: 1.5cm, label slightly soiled, torn across centre, scuffed at edges and nicked at base, wax capsule cracked and slightly damaged’. It is listed on a few fine and rare wine type websites, though like with Hedonism Wines here, it is always ‘out of stock‘. Estimated price per bottle would be £6,000 – £9,000.
Champagne Dom Pérignon 1928 – Classed as an ‘average crop, but magnificent grapes’ by Dom Pérignon. Very little information on this vintage is to be found except for random blogs / articles / user questions and replies ie from drinks planet here. Wine-searcher indicates a price of £2,901 from march 2015 though this is slightly a reserved estimate and the approximate price today should be around £4,000 – £6,500.
Champagne Dom Pérignon 1929 – Reviews seems pretty decent for this vintage such as ‘at the highest level‘ from an article on Academy of Ancient Wines. Information on the value of this vintage is once again quite scarce so hard to formulate a guide price. Taking in to consideration that this is the last release from Dom Pérignon of the 1920’s then approximate value would be around £2,500 – £4,500.
Champagne Dom Pérignon 1934 – ‘Generous harvest in mid-September – Rapid flowering in best possible conditions, insignificant damage from disease and insects’ – as quoted by Dom Pérignon website. A few websites have questions about the vintage including one person trying to sell one label back in 2004 and stating that the ‘bottle still has bubbles when shaken’! Reference a drinksforum post for this! Rarity still a big pull for these early vintages so guide price to be £2,000 – £3,250.
Champagne Dom Pérignon 1943 – Quoted as being an ‘Exceptional quality’ vintage the 1943 sees a bit more details regarding recent sales via a search online. £950 from a sale back in 2018 though bidforwine shows a £150 sale with a bottle that seems to be for show only with at least oxidisation and light strike. Estimate price for this vintage £1,750 – £2,750.

“I have tasted many fine vintages from Dom Pérignon and over the years purchased quite a few vintage labels from many different sources to include online auctions and local household auctions. I have enjoyed a few visits to the the famous Abbey (Saint-Pierre) d’Hautvillers and enjoyed private tastings on the grounds behind (which are a great spot for photographs). In London I have been invited to varied vertical tastings as well as those for special releases to include a very memorable seat for the unveiling of the P2 Rosé Tasting of the 1996 hosted by Richard Geoffroy.” Christopher Walkey
The vineyards of Hautvillers are some of the most splendid and picturesque – Here’s me in 2018 with the drone capturing the magic, I hope you agree with me:
