Kiwi Royale Cocktail
6th May 2021
Casino Royale, no, sorry, Kiwi Royale, the perfect blend of Kiwi and Sparkling Wine, fruits can be a wonderful ingredient in creating a cocktail and the delicate kiwi is no exception, let’s see how it got its name and where it comes from.
Although we call it the Kiwi, its official title is the Kiwifruit, but it used to have another name, the Chinese Gooseberry or yang tao. When the fruit arrived in New Zealand it was renamed after New Zealand’s national animal, the Kiwi bird, because the bird is fuzzy and brown and the fruit is fuzzy and brown.
The Kiwi originates from China and was called yang tao, the first record of the Kiwifruit dates back to the 12th century during the Song dynasty in China, it was first consumed for medicinal purposes, during 1904 the Kiwifruit was brought to New Zealand from China in the form of seeds by school principal Isabel Fraser, where it was then first commercialised and grown for popular consumption, it was during World War II where British and American servicemen stationed in New Zealand got introduced to the fruit, after the war, it was exported to Great Britain and then California in 1962s.
