Camel Valley 2014 – The Vintage of Dreams

No spring frosts, a perfect fruit-set, enough rain in August to swell the crop (even that had the good grace to fall during the hours of darkness) and the driest and warmest September for nearly 100 years came together for a perfect storm of good grape growing news at Camel Valley.
The maritime South Westerly’s were replaced by mostly warm Continental air in a benign flow reversal. It wasn’t so much a BBQ summer, so much as a year we got fed up with BBQ’s, because there were so many!
Picking started at Camel Valley on the 23 September, 2 weeks earlier than the previous earliest of 2006 and finished on 7th October, the usual start date.
Yields in all varieties were very high and unusually ripe. 84 tons were picked, all in dry weather, apart from a shower or two, on the last day.
